Album Notes
Pregnancy can present challenges anyway (including difficulties actually conceiving and carrying a child), and things can get even more tricky when there are pregnancy complications. The complications can include having had previous losses, anxiety, depression, stress, an existing physical health condition that a mother has, a condition that the baby has, in utero, a physical condition associated with pregnancy (e.g., gestational diabetes, preclampsia, placenta previa) and so on. Staying calm in amongst this can be difficult. These exercises are short, mindfulness based meditations and strategies to help you connect with your baby and increase calm feelings. Mindfulness is about being present, in the here and now, in a non-judgemental and compassionate way.

These exercises are meant to be used regularly, to increase your overall sense of wellbeing - pick a few you like. There are also some exercises that can be used for specific instances (e.g., when feeling panicked) in order to help that particular instance. The more familiar you are with the exercises, the more you can regularly use them.

Here is a little bit of information about each track:

01 Grounding: too often, we are in our head, and not really present. At times, we may not connect with our body at all, and feel unreal. This exercise, which I see as foundational, is about connecting with what you can actually see, hear, touch, and smell. It orients you to the present moment.

02 Connecting with your Baby: if there is a lot happening, it can be hard to connect with your baby. This exercise invites you to take time and deepen your connection.

03: Notice and Deepen Joy: it can be easy to be swept up in thinking and planning. Negative feelings may often abound. This exercise is about focussing on feelings of pleasure and joy, no matter how tiny or non-existent they may seem.

04: Dealing with Negative Predictions: Our minds can race ahead and predict all sorts of scenarios. This is about halting that process and gently prying free the grip our mind may have on us and our feelings.

05: Living with the Fear: If something negative has happened, or we have concerns, it's easy for The Fear to take over our lives. In this exercise, we reconcile with the Fear and make some peace with it.

06: Breathe through Panic: It's common to have feelings of panic. I gently guide you to managing a panic attack or feelings of panic.

07: When feeling Overwhelmed: It's common to feel overwhelmed with pregnancy and any complications. This is a gentle guided meditation to ease the hold of your mind and help bring you into the present.

10: Tolerating Uncertainty: We want to know definites! This exercise is about gently holding the sense of the unknown.

11: Tuning into your Wise Self: When overwhelmed, scared, anxious, sad, and navigating a complicated pregnancy, it can be easy to lose track of that Wiser, kinder, more compassionate part of ourselves.

12: Bonus Track: A Peaceful Sunny Walk: created by Paul Sammes at Arthouse Media, this track is a 10 minute sound track with no accompanying vocals. I hope you can use it to relax, meditate, connect with your baby, and enjoy.

Recorded at Arthouse Media (Dunedin) and sound engineering and mastering by Paul Sammes. Cover photo by Clive Copeman Photography. A huge thank you!
