Album Notes
Kumkum Sanyal is a Hindustani (North Indian) classical vocalist, gifted with an extraordinarily serene and rich voice. To learn more about Kumkum's music and to listen to different samples of her classical and light classical singing, visit Kumkum's web site : www.kumkumsanyal.com

Endowed with a mellifluous voice and a gift of touching the hearts of her audience, Kumkum Sanyal has enthralled Hindustani music lovers all over India and the United States with her spiritual Khayals and Taranas, devotional Bhajans and romantic Thumris.

Kumkum was born in Chakdaha, West Bengal, in a music-loving family, her father being a flutist and mother a vocalist. Kumkum’s astonishing musical talent was developed in her early years under the tutelage of Shri Amalendu Pal and Pandit Vishmadev Bhattacharya. Later, she received training and guidance from Pandit Vinayak Torvi, a renowned exponent of Gwalior and Kirana Gharanas. Kumkum won many awards and laurels, and gave invited performances at prestigious music conferences beginning at the age of nine.

Aided by her creative genius and rigorous training, Kumkum has assimilated and combined different styles of Hindustani music, and evolved a distinctive style of her own. To sing with complete involvement and emoting the “Bhava” of raga-ragini is her forte. This quality has won her the admiration of music lovers and critics in India and the U.S. Kumkum excels not only in pure classical music but she also captivates her audience with exquisitely beautiful and skillful presentations of semi-classical music such as Thumri, Dadra, Hori, Bhajans and Bengali Ragpradhans.

Kumkum is a dedicated teacher offering rigorous training of Hindustani vocal music. Her attention to tonal perfection, passion for music, practical teaching of artistic presentation, and an uncompromising standard combined with a caring nature have endeared Kumkum to many disciples in the U.S.

Samples of reviews by newspapers and music critics:

“A vocal with Grace: The opening raag Puriya Kalyan itself had an arresting quality. Revealing the lyrical grandeur and with her melodious voice, Kumkum also presented a thumri (piloo) and a hori, with grace”

“God gave her the gift of voice and talent - what she did with it is her offering to God”.

Sangeeth Sagar producers of India have released CDs and cassettes containing her rendering of Khayals, Taranas, Thumris, Bhajans and other light classical songs. Musicians Guild of India has released CDs of her live concerts. For details, go to : www.kumkumsanyal.com

In her rendering of the raga Madhuvanti (recorded live at a concert) on this CD, entitled Eternal, Kumkum imparted a spiritual beauty to the romantic pathos of this evening raga. She also offers on this album a soulful and enthralling presentation of a timeless devotional Bhajan.

Nitin Mitta, one of the most outstanding Tabla players of the younger generation, gives Kumkum expert accompaniment.
