ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
After their highly acclaimed debut album focusing on Spanish music, the Kupiński Guitar Duo has decided to present a varied programme. The virtuoso couple, hailed by many as one of the best guitar duos in the world, has enriched the classical guitar repertoire with beautiful arrangements of pieces originally written for piano or orchestra, including such demanding works as George Gershwin`s Rhapsody in Blue. This CD exhibits not only their technical and musical excellence, but also their mastery in music arrrangement.
How else can one open an album if not with an ouverture? The introduction to Gioacchino Rossini`s opera La Gazza Ladra sounds very natural and is a prime example of the Duo`s aforementioned skills. Even in the most dramatic moments, Rossini`s music seems to always find a way to decrease the tension, promising a happy ending of the story written by Giovanni Gherardini.
"There is nothing more beautiful than a guitar...save perhaps two" - these words of Chopin are often quoted by guitar aficionados. The instrument requires great art to transcribe the works of Chopin in a way that preserves the sense of the original version. Three Mazurkas chosen by the Kupiński Guitar Duo make a very interesting set demonstrating how the guitar is capable of creating great emotions naturally present in the piano music of Chopin.
Folk music has inspired not only Chopin but also Dušan Bogdanović, an excellent guitarist and composer born in Belgrade. Bogdanović's Sonata Fantasia is one of the most often performed contemporary pieces written for two guitars. The first and third part are full of energy and irregular rhythms which are typical of Balkan dances. The middle part seems to create an impression of hiding a dark secret which is strengthened by the use of jazz harmony and sonoristic effects.
The two pieces written by the King of the Tango, Astor Piazzolla, are equally full of emotions. The first piece, Invierno Porteño (Winter from the Four Seasons in Buenos Aires) starts with one of the most melancholic themes in the history of music. The second piece, the energetic Zita, takes us from dreaming about the gloomy docks into the very eye of a musical hurricane.
George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue is the perfect way to end this album on a high note. Thanks to the Polish guitar masters, the impossible becomes possible with the sounds of different orchestral instruments emerging from only twelve strings. It is not without reason that Beethoven had once compared Mauro Giuliani's guitar to a small orchestra. However, it remains unclear what Beethoven would have done after listening to Ewa Jabłczyńska and Dariusz Kupiński. One may assume that he would have dedicated his 10th symphony to them. After listening to this emotional album, one may feel lucky that the Duo allows us to relax by saying goodbye with an interpretation of the beautiful and lyrical Oriental by Enrique Granados. Hopefully, not for long!
