ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Crystal clear like sparkling light reflected in the many facets of a beautiful gem, the sound of Kyoko Oyobe’s music becomes alive for us tonight here at Smalls, where Jazz lovers meet and ears delight, while something is cooking…
As if by magic we are transported to a world of wonders, a world of dancing colors and visible soundscapes. In this very moment we are about to share the amazing experience and beauty of sound creation!
Kyoko is inviting us to join her in an extraordinary journey, starting right on “The Third Eye”, first of her seven original tunes. They take us to a very special place, and not unlike on the beautiful island of our dreams, we can truly feel the soft and warm breeze of “Asian Airs”, enjoy wonderful things and the breath taking sight of a “Spring Sky”, with all it’s mind opening vastness; jump into the “Brave One”, that adventurous trip into being fully alive in the present moment and “My Pleasure!”- Our pleasure indeed!
Fearlessly original, gracefully elegant, the music now is introducing us to the “Great Unknown”, where a soothing melody is opening theme, like a long awaited birthday present from home…This peaceful ballad evokes in us deep gratefulness for the precious gift of life we all equally share, and the great wisdom we are all part of, in good and in bad times, and whether we are aware of it or not. Actually there are no bad times really, as we come to understand listening to “The Fattest Cat of N.Y.”, the hilariously funny finale humouresque.
Thus we celebrate with the fabulous Kyoko Oyobe Trio the most refreshing vibrations of all: laughter, compassion and true stories to be lived and told to one another.
Here’s to music and the Kyoko Oyobe Trio! Thank you, Kyoko!

始まりは、“The Third Eye”。 そして、“My Pleasure!” といっても、続く“The Fattest Cat of N.Y.”

By Jerry D'Souza

Kyoko Oyobe brings an eclectic presence to her music. As a composer, she finds inspiration in mainstream jazz to which she adds her own classical music perspective. As a pianist, she condenses her thoughts and then lays them out impressively. She does not lose her sense of place or time when doing so, and her instincts are strong enough to let the tunes flourish and make their presence felt.
When Oyobe moved to New York she established herself performing in several clubs, including Milton's Playhouse, 55 Bar, and Fat Cat. Another jazz club she has performed in is Small's, where she recorded Cookin' At Smalls with bassist Michael O'Brien and drummer Clifford Barbaro. The intimate setting of a trio works just fine; the three have a communicative rapport that gives each song creativity and depth.
The program is diverse, balancing up-tempo tunes with ballads. The mood is kept at a constantly high level of interest from the time it kicks off with "The Third Eye." It dances in on the edge of funk driven by the bass and drums, into which Oyobe steps in with a cascade of notes. The head plays around the melody before visiting it and giving it its succulent due. Oyobe is a fluid font of ideas, her emphatic chord work adding to the flavor. O'Brien gets an extended foray on the bass that he manifests with a textured presence that evolves into a conversation with Barbaro. Barbaro's accents and sense of time signal his attention to energizing the pulse.
Oyobe livens "The Fattest Cat in N.Y" with a welter of scintillating notes. Her sense of harmony and her two-handed attacks invigorate her path before O'Brien captures the moment with dizzying arco lines. "Asian Airs," with its Oriental tinge, is becoming. The pace is gentle, the melody has a soft glow, and the overall effect is quietly stunning.
This is a strong debut for Oyobe. She has the creativity to enhance her technique and in the greater scheme of things to take her art to a wider audience.

Kyoko Oyobe Trio, “Cookin' at Smalls”

By: Edward Blanco

Pianist Kyoko Oyobe from Okayama, Japan is a young lady whose love for jazz brought her to New York in 2006 for the opportunity to learn, develop and become a part of the jazz-rich environment in the Big Apple. This Oyobe has done by performing at various venues in New York while establishing her jazz credentials. Cookin' at Smalls is Oyobe's sensational debut album—recorded live in December 2008 at Smalls jazz club—a subterranean hot spot for jazz in New York's West Village—founded by Mitch Borden(Smalls and Fat Cat Clubs) who coincidently also provides the liner notes for the CD.

Accompanied by bassist Michael O'Brien and drummer Clifford Barbaro, Oyobe offers seven original compositions of expressive quasi-classical modern jazz that is both accessible and intricate at the same time. Her writing reveals an energy and sophistication that is reflective in the music found here. This energy comes through on the beginning piece, “The Third Eye” where the pianists' nimble finger play invites the listener with a rich melodic tone. “Asian Airs”
is essentially a lengthy light ballad possessing a decidedly classical flavor and texture. Oyobe uses a straightforward modern jazz approach to “Spring Sky,” which features O'Brien on an extensive bass solo as part of the mix.

Inspired by the movie of the same name “The Brave One,” the pianist expresses the feelings of love and loss in a solemn melancholy piece she dedicates to her mother. Changing direction a bit, the music ventures into up tempo territory with the cool rhythm of “My Pleasure,” which in fact is certainly a pleasure to hear. The disc rounds out with the tasteful ballad of “Great Unknown,” and the fast-paced and jazzy finale piece “The Fattest Cat in N.Y.” taking a jab at herself for her previous overeating condition. On this number Oyobe let's it all hang out demonstrating her enormous talents and chops on the piano. Cookin' at Smalls is definitely an excellent first effort by one very talented lady who can 'cook' with the best of them. Pianist Kyoko Oyobe serves up a dish of beautiful music that is guaranteed not to disappoint.

New to me is Kyoko Oyobe and her compositional skills and piano virtuosity. In this trio recording, live at Small’s, she demonstrates multicolor inventions in her compositions and flawless technique. The trio is well knit and the whole package of interesting originals expressed tradition and modern sounds and self. Kyoko is witty and right on the mark. Her improvisations are quick and spontaneous and she builds each chorus in gradual, logical and exciting series . She has enough room in seven takes on this CD to spread out. There is ample time for her bassist to demonstrate his ability as a soloist as well. Her originals are compelling , but I would like to hear her approach to some popular standards, jazz standards and ballads . Perhaps for another CD, I am sure. Her comments concerning the origin of her compositions are interesting. I won’t tell you what they are until you see them for yourself but they do tell us that this player is more than a great musician. I think she is happy in her skin, humble and has a great sense of humor.

I would like to hear more of her as time goes on and I know that we'll catch her on the New York scene.

So, look for Kyoko Oyobe, and listen to Cookin’ at Small’s.
