Album Notes
The production of this CD has been a labor of love for all involved. First and foremost the students in the Lakewood High School Jazz Ensemble under the incredible direction of Michael Kernodle. Mr. Kernodle is a dedicated music educator who is blessed with the gift of taking good student musicians and turning them into great student musicians. Lakewood High School, a public school in St. Petersburg, Florida, is lucky to have him.

The high quality of the sound recording is due to a partnership with the MIRA (Music Industry and Recording Arts) program of St. Petersburg College. The CD was recorded in their music auditorium. Sound engineering was provided by Tom Morris, who is also a professor in the program. The MIRA program is one of the best values around for young adults who want to pursue a college education in the music industry.

Thanks to St. Petersburg City Council member Steve Kornell for his tireless support of these young musical artists. His primary role was bringing the various partners together and finding sponsors to fund the recording of the CD. (Thanks to the Tampa Bay Rays, Skyway Marina District, Lakewood Estates Civic Association, Greater Pinellas Point Civic Association, the Broadwater Neighborhood Association and the City of St. Petersburg). All proceeds from CD sales will go to fund equipment for the band and to help underwrite their trips to perform at various jazz festivals and competitions.

This CD provides a rare glimpse into the early development of future jazz greats. The students provide their unique musical interpretation to the cover songs by jazz greats such as Duke Ellington, Thad Jones, and Eddie Barefield. However, it is the student originals that truly make this CD stand out.

The opening track, Leave Me Be, is a jazz combo song that will transport you from 2018 to New York City in the midst of the Harlem Renaissance.

The skillfully played chord progressions of Lunaclipse are reminiscent of the musical genius of 1960's era John Coltrane.

This One begins with a nice guitar groove which is then overlaid with beautiful melodic saxophone and trumpet solos.

The CD closes with Sweet Thing , a guitar based song written by Zach Blair-Andrews for his high school sweetheart. Alternating guitar and trumpet solos are exchanged over a smooth groove that reflects a beautiful day along the waterfront of St. Petersburg, Florida.

This CD is a must have for all that love jazz and all that believe in the power of music education in the public school system.
