ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The Neophonic movement, launched in the mid-sixties, was another grand STAN KENTON adventure. This one had the ultimate goal of establishing contemporary resident jazz orchestras in major cities across the United States and even around the globe. The prototype
orchestra, The Los Angeles Neophonic, played eleven concerts over three seasons, but funding supportdisappeared and the band dissolved in 1968. Critic William Grim wrote: \"undoubtedly one of the most important experiments in the history of modern jazz.\"

Fortunately the first and third performances from the inaugural 1965 L.A. Neophonic season were expertly recorded and are presented in Tantara’s two doubledisc volume NEW HORIZONS release. Former Kenton reed player Joel Kaye founded the New York Neophonic Orchestra in the early ‘70s and the Neophonic Jazz Orchestra, based in Denver, in 1994. The second disc of volume two contains fourteen inspired selections from those two bands and features works by the revered Johnny Richards.

• Included is Stan Kenton’s last major composition, a tour-de-force titled \"OPUS FOR TYMPANI\"
• Eleven world premiere performances!
• Engaging liner notes from two highly respected
Kentonia writers.
• Previously unpublished photos
• \"Geniuses At Work\" would be an appropriate sub-title
for this release due to the many extremely talented
composers on board.
• All tracks in Glorious Stereo!
