ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"Language of Romance: Marx and Bellini" developed from years of performing together on stage. Marie Libal-Smith and Lara Lynn Cottrill took the step of making a permanent mark on the world of performance art song through this album. Starting with the lush orchestration of Marx and moving to the more exposed Bellini shows contrast not only in musical taste, but also in performance style and technique.

Pianist Marie Libal-Smith has performed in numerous venues throughout the United States and Canada. She has appeared at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Queens College in New York City, and the Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory of Music in Cleveland, Ohio. Ms. Libal-Smith has performed in concert with flutists Carol Wincenc, Amy Porter, Kennedy Center Opera Orchestra principal flutist Adria Sternstein Foster, violinists Christopher Wu and Linda Fisher of the Pittsburgh Symphony, and Marissa Regni of the National Symphony in Washington D.C. In 2012, Ms. Libal-Smith performed the premiere of Indiana composer Diane Whitacre’s The Shoemaker’s Dream with flutist Kathy Blocki. In Pittsburgh she has performed with members of the Pittsburgh Opera Young Artist’s program. For many years, Ms. Libal-Smith accompanied for the Metropolitan Opera District auditions held in Bloomington, Indiana. She also served as masterclass accompanist for Giorgio Tozzi, Vera Scammon, and Gianna D’Angelo among others. Ms. Libal-Smith has been collaborative pianist at several institutions including the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, the DePauw University School of Music, the University of Alabama Huntsville, Duquesne University, and the Carnegie Mellon University School of Music in the flute studio of Jeanne Baxtresser. Currently, she is a member of the piano faculty of Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA where she coaches for Opera Westminster and collaborates in recital with students and guest artists. Ms. Libal-Smith earned the BM in piano from the Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory of Music and a MM from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. She also obtained the doctoral-level Specialist in Music Education degree from IU. In recent years, Ms. Libal-Smith has collaborated with soprano Lara Lynn Cottrill in numerous recital venues in the Pittsburgh area and is pleased to present this CD of some of their favorite art songs.

Described as “ a high-fashion model and a voice of size, clarity and wide coloristic range… a three-dimensional figure who combined vulnerability with strength and tugged at the heartstrings in her every breath and movement.” (Pittsburgh Post Gazette 2013), soprano Lara Lynn Cottrill most recently performed Donna Anna with Opera Western Reserve. During Opera Theater of Pittsburgh’s summer season, Ms. Cottrill portrayed Antonia in Tales of Hoffmann and Mamah in Shining Brow. She covered Frasquita in Carmen as an Apprentice Artist with Sarasota Opera and performed The Foreign Women in Menotti’s The Consul with Opera New Jersey. Other operatic roles include: Pamina, Susannah in Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah, her Pittsburgh Opera debut as Barbarina in Le nozze di Figaro, Sandrina in Mozart’s La finta giardiniera, Lauretta in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, Papagena in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, The Young Conductor in La Divina, and Adina in The Elixir of Love. Upcoming engagements include Alice Front in A New Kind of Fallout with Opera Theater of Pittsburgh. Lara was the 1st Place Winner in 2014 Coeur d’Alene Symphony Competition, 2014 JTVA Competition Finalist, 2013 2nd Prize Winner of the NOA Competition, 2011 Finalist for Opera Columbus, 2009 Winner of the Pittsburgh Concert Society, and 2005 First Place of Friends of Eastman Opera. Lara graduated with her master’s from Eastman School of Music and her bachelor’s from University of Miami. Her recital appearances include the eastern United States, Idaho, Italy, Austria, and South Africa. Her collaborations with Marie Libal-Smith started on the stage of Geneva College and continue to grow from there!
