ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The second solo album from Portland musician Lara Michell (who doubles as guitarist for highly-regarded Portland band Carmina Piranha), SOMNILOQUY is a dark, beautiful dreamscape built on themes of sleep, subconsciousness and waking. The songs are characterized by Michell's signature classically-inspired finger picking, ethereal vocals and mysterious, impressionistic lyrics. This CD "fully reveals Michell's substantial talent for atypical, complex acoustic picking and eerie yet gorgeous musical soliloquies" (OREGONIAN, 12/14/01).

Somniloquy a dream set to music.
While the tracks of Lara Michell's "Somniloquy" clearly are enveloped in a theme of sleep, dreams, and quiet reflection (both in title and lyric), the musical element of the entire album awakens rather than subdues the listener. Intricate acoustic guitar stylings complimented by piano, marimba, and a host of other instruments are anything but sedating. Rather, the album allows the listener an opportunity to experience a conscious daydream of sorts, somnambulance directed by Michell's voice and set to her music. From "Twilight" through "Autumn" (my personal nomination for the album's best track) and beyond, Somniloquy is a dream worth repeating. If the album has a weak point, it is only in it's duration (approximately 35 minutes). Michell succeeds in completing her story as she wishes it to be told, and maybe it is best that the dream not be allowed to ramble... or perhaps it's the perfect length and I'm all too eager to remain in her dreamworld. It's a wonderful place to be, and Somniloquy is a wonderful way to get there.
