Mr. Confidence

by Laura Higgins

Laura's music is rapidly gaining attention in the pop and folk communities. Her words are shockingly raw and emotional. The music is equally powerful.

Album Notes
Laura Higgins is a singer/songwriter who writes out of necessity. Her music is raw, honest, wracked with emotion and a refreshing break from the prepackaged sounds currently on the radio. Drawing from her haunted past (which ranges from teenage angst to a cancer diagnosis at the age of 19) and her passion for literature, Laura's songs are often lyrically unexpected and seeping with drama.

Born in Warren, NJ, Laura began playing music at age 5 on an "old and grumpy" 100 year old piano that she appropriately nicknamed "Ironside." With only a year or two of lessons, Laura continued to teach herself to play by ear. "I have an amazing relationship with my piano." she says. "It has always helped me to express my emotions in a way that words never could. My father used to say that he knew to stay away when I was banging out minor notes because it was a sure sign that I was working through something in my head. He was usually right too."

This musical release proved to be a valuable tool when as a junior at Boston College, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma and left school to undergo chemotherapy. "It felt like my life was pulled out from under me and I was disappearing. I was wracked with a hundred emotions at once and I couldn't figure out how to process them all. I ended up writing my way into survivorship, and it's something that I still continue to do. Post-cancer life is tricky. It can trip you up with fear when you least expect it. I've accepted that an ordinary life may always be slightly out of reach for me."

Laura's songs are anything but ordinary. They are raw to the nerve and challenge the audience to navigate the depths of human experience. They are not just about cancer either. On her album, 'Mr. Confidence," songs like "The Space Between," and "Find My Way To You," address chaotic love, while the title track "Mr. Confidence," is about insecurity, self-doubt, and perfectionism, all of which Laura struggles with.

"Lately I've been toying with the idea of perfect imperfection. I have this hope that one day I won't be immediately wracked with insecurity over missing a note on the piano or my voice sounding 'quirky' every now and then. I know that perfection is impossible. So I've come to the conclusion that being perfectly imperfect is a much better goal. I know, I'm strange."

Perfect or not, Laura's feet seem to be on the ground and running in the direction of loftier goals than she would otherwise admit. Having many credits to her name, including a recent licensing arrangement with the "I'm Too Young For This" Cancer survivorship campaign, a March 2007 televised intervew and performance on Fox's My9 News as a feature for their "Inspirational Women" series, a finalist in Ed McMahon's "Next Big Star" competition, and "Best New Singer/Songwriter" Boston music award nomination in 2001, Laura's talent cannot be denied.

Be sure to check her out should she be playing near you. And don't forget the tissues. Between her heartwrenching songs and her self-depricating humor, you'll either laugh or cry yourself to tears.

Finally - someone who puts a voice to my experience!
The songs on this CD speak so eloquently of my own experience - I finally have the words to express my deepest emotions. Add to that Laura's amazing voice... I listen to this CD non-stop!! Hope there's a new release soon.

beatiful voice sings poetic works but waiting for the Big payoff
As I've experience many times, the opening of the cd was filled with certain hope for the listener if not for the victims in her songs. A beautiful voice lamenting great verse pulls you right in. Ms Higgins has a genuine talent for singing about serious subjects. It pulls on your heart strings immediately and you can't wait to hear more, until you do. She doesn't take the listener anywhere else, it's just more of the same....over and over. She'd be well advised by her producers to take more chances with upbeat material and disperse it in between her more emphasized personal material. There is raw talent here that can truly be developed by an experienced producer.

artisticly lyrical
the melodies of her voice are penetrating like the visuals of a Monet painting. Can't wait to see her show in NJ.

I love this chick
When I first heard this song on some local folk program I was pulling in to the parking lot of a grocery store (thank god) and was able to write her name down. I went home that day and ordered the CD without a second thought. I was sure (I know this sounds 4th grade) she was talking to me, through me. And as a writer, I know this is the ultimate compliment. The song was All That it seems and it is still my daily mantra. I have to hear that song and now the whole CD every day. At least for awhile longer. It is on my library and my other favorite is Never I'll need. What a beautiful writer, voice, depth, soul. I'm a huge fan and have already recommended her to friends. Come to Santa Cruz, Ca.

Thank you!
I could listen to this cd forever. The lyrics are so real and her voice is unique and soothing. I can't wait to hear the next album.

Best in a while
I almost did not buy this because I tend to shy away from "melancholy" music...and I never write reviews, but I could not resist. Laura Higgins is a survivor. Her music is as honest as you can get having been through what little I know of her story. This is truly inspiring stuff. I can't stop reading the lyrics, much less listening to the songs.

Unbelievable courage!
I can't stop listening. I feel like all of the "pressure in my mind" finally has a voice. Thank you, Laura. Your songs have really touched me.

Where have you been?
I can't believe that I just found this cd! Mr. Confidence proves to me that there is beauty in every misfortune. These lyrics blow me away with how real they are. There is so much strength in Laura Higgins' ability to unleash her personal vulnerabilities. I can't wait for the next one!

Star Ledger

NJ Star Ledger Review
With lyrics that are both haunting and comforting at the same time, and a voice that is at once conversational as it is ephemeral, it is no wonder Laura Higgins is taking the folk scene by storm -- NJ Star Ledger
