Album Notes
Threshold is Lauren Sevigh Smith’s debut album, its title representing the beginning of her lifelong pursuit in music. The album gained its namesake from an oil painting by her mother, Kerri, which is featured in the physical album artwork.

Although she is just fifteen years-old, you wouldn’t know it by listening to her sing. In her home of Toledo, Ohio, Lauren is fortunate to be able to meet and work with many exceptionally talented, loving, and generous musicians. At the age of ten, Lauren began studying under vocalist Jean Holden, who is also known as “Toledo’s First Lady of Song.” Jean’s instruction and loving nature helped provide a solid foundation for Lauren to build from. She also provided Lauren with many opportunities to perform, and at age eleven, gave her a chance to perform with a live band for the first time. At that performance, Lauren was introduced to Kay Elliott of the Art Tatum Jazz Society.

Kay has arranged for Lauren to sing on several occasions for the Art Tatum Jazz Society. It was during the Jazz Society performances that Lauren had the fortune of performing with many talented musicians, including a Toledo legend, bassist Clifford Murphy. Thanks to Kay, Lauren was able to meet Jon Hendricks and was invited to perform with pianist Johnny O’Neal during a 2014 show held at the Toledo Club. Outside of her hometown, Lauren has also received instruction from the New York Voices Vocal Jazz Camp for the past four years. The breadth of musical knowledge that she has gained through the camp is immeasurable, as well as the friendships forged.

Lauren is currently studying and performing with composer, arranger, pianist, multi-instrumentalist, and Toledo-area legend, Gene Parker. In addition to regular performances in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan, he teaches Jazz Studies at Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio and at Wayne State University, in Detroit, Michigan. Gene is very generous with sharing his talent and experience with Lauren, and he was instrumental in the development and creation of Threshold. The exceptional musicians featured on the album were arranged by Gene, who plays on piano and flute. Ray Parker, New York-area bassist, band leader, sideman, producer, recordist from New York as well as Gene’s son, is on bass with the incredibly talented Toledo area percussionist, Sam Miller, on drums.

Toledo’s Jazz roots run deep, and the musicians who call the city home are the ultimate example of that. Lauren is thankful for being able to work and learn from such talent and is proud to be a part of the Toledo Jazz tradition.
