Album Notes
I have to confess that It is quite an unusual choice for Natalia and I to tackle Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony. Almost too daring one might say. 
In the past five years, we have been fortunate enough to perform and record a lot of two-piano repertoire - from Brahms to Rachmaninoff, Mozart to Lowell Liebermann. Most of it was written specifically for 2 pianos. Then, in the past year, I think we were both ready to experience something different - a unique and  emotional journey that this symphony has to offer.  

Growing up in Russia, Natalia and I were always surrounded by Tchaikovsky's music - his ballets, symphonies, concertos.  Practicing his "Children's Album" as kids, then his "Seasons", and of course Concerto No. 1. I guess the love for Tchaikovsky's music is in our blood, it is an integral part of who we are as musicians, as human beings. Just to think - going to the Moscow Conservatoire, or even just passing it - the first thing you see is a monument of Tchaikovsky, looking down on you, always there watching over you :-)

I was always a firm believer that certain music speaks to us at a certain time of our lives. It comes at the moments we are ready for it, ready to take it all in and experience it, ready to comprehend it. And I think that given our duo’s collective experiences, the time is NOW. Somehow this music entered both of our lives at the right moment. 

We love and admire the original and have asked ourselves many times if it is, in fact, necessary for us to play a transcription of a work that, not only, wasn’t written for two pianos, but also is of the most beloved, iconic and talked-about Symphonies ever written. 

And here is our best answer...

Our love for this music has always been overpowering. After much debating and working on the score (transcribed for two pianos by Schaefer), reworking certain parts and aspects of it, adding and subtracting, we decided to give it a try and programmed it in one of our recitals. We wanted to experience the sound on two pianos, see the audience’s response and ultimately, hear and feel our own honest reaction to the entire symphony in this arrangement.

The result was actually quite breathtaking and incredibly humbling. The memory and feeling of that first live performance is still freshly with us. To have been able to perform this symphony as a whole, to experience the complexities of it, the emotional journey that this symphony takes you on, was unforgettable, fulfilling and overwhelming. I remember the dead silence of the audience as we were about to play the last few lines of the last movement. The “morendo” at the end was probably one of the most powerful and enriching moments in our professional lives.

After that, we set our minds to record it, In hopes that our audience would appreciate the different sound and a new experience of this magnificent work. 
For the first time Natalia and I also experienced recording ourselves without a producer or an extra pair of ears. It was just the two of us in the room, quietly trying to put it all together, concentrating and listening to ourselves like we never have before. It was very befitting. To be able to play this music and record it almost in solitude. 

We did think a lot about whether we wanted to record anything else and make this a "full" album by modern day standards, with many classical albums filled to capacity at 70-80 minutes of music. After trying several scenarios, we understood that we wanted the symphony to stand on its own. And have just a little taste of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker as an encore, or a little bonus as some people might say :-). That way, this record ended up being the perfect LP length and who knows, with continued support from our listeners, friends and colleagues, maybe one-day LP Classics will release a special LP and this project would be a perfect candidate for that.

Our gratitude and thanks go out to many people that were involved in making this record come to life, people in our lives that had to endure our obsession over this symphony. But most importantly, our endless gratitude goes out to Jamie Titus, for providing invaluable inspiration! Jamie's painting envelopes all the aspects of Symphony No. 6 and represents the emotional core of what this symphony is about.

Lastly, this symphony is a journey of many emotions and out of all those emotions that this music evokes, the sense of loss is one that always stands out. Natalia and I, and we are sure all our listeners, have had our share of losses. Some, we overcome and some we live with, but with each loss, we acquire a new strength. For us, this symphony gave us strength to face many fears, to record a performance of this work in which our love and devotion to it will be apparent, our efforts are understood and hopefully, appreciated.
We hope that this symphony brings you, our listener, strength - individual and necessary to your own journey.
