Album Notes
Lawrence believes every song is an institution and should be a synergistic marriage of lyrics and music. As such, he writes, composes, arranges and performs all aspects of his original compositions.

“First Chance” is his first solo album and is released by Record High Music – an independent label. He brings to this album the culmination and cumulative blend of all the music and song writing study, “wood shedding” and muse of a lifetime of living, breathing and hearing (even dreaming) music. The arrangements, guitar, bass, instrument programming, vocals and background vocals are all done by Lawrence on “First Chance.”

He is a self-taught guitarist and began learning to play on a home-made guitar because he loved the sound and resonation of guitar strings. Learning first to play by ear (left handed) he was told he should study music and play right handed. He followed that advice but found after years he was missing the dexterity and creative flow of playing left handed. So he switched back to playing left handed and created his own chord and chart study that having mastered he is proficient at music theory as well as playing by ear. He also mastered his vocal range, pitch and harmonies by creating a vocal study regimen.

When he realized he wanted to improve on his song writing he found the opportunity in studying directly with Arthur Hamilton (“Cry Me a River”) and Annette Tucker when they chose him from song portfolio submittals. He learned from them key elements of song crafting and that “a ‘jam’ is not a song.”

His credentials also include forming his own group; studio guitarist and arranger on projects for signed artists; producing projects for new artists; and certified recording engineer.

Since he loves the craftsmanship and artistry of music and songs he has been inspired by many including: Stevie Wonder, Miles Davis, Smokey Robinson, Leon Russell, Earth, Wind & Fire, Jimi Hendrix, Beatles, Bobby Womack, Santana, Jazz Crusaders and Chaka Khan & Rufus. Born and raised in Los Angeles he had the influence that comes from a lot of music and musicians coming to and residing in the area.

Cheers to you for listening to his work and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

“’First Chance’ was created out of an intense desire that everyone experience life as one chooses, explore the new and the different and to be other than what is expected. ‘First Chance’ is an affirmation of personal sovereignty – to trust oneself in having the experiences one wants regardless of the pressures and forces that restrict individuality” (McGhee, 2008).
