ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
SOMETIMES WORDS JUST GET IN THE WAY. THEY CAN OBSCURE AS OPPOSED TO CLARIFY. THIS CAN BE THE CASE WITH MUSIC & LYRICS. WORDS MAY GET IN THE WAY OF WHAT ‘S REALLY TRYING TO BE SAID. I DON’T LIKE WORDS IN MUSIC ANY MORE THAN I LIKE A STRANGER TELLING ME THEIR MEDICAL HISTORY WHILE WAITING FOR THE BUS. WORDS CAN BE HURTFUL. THEY CAN CUT LIKE A KNIFE AND BURN LIKE A FLAME. I’VE HEARD ENOUGH WORDS.
MY FAVORITE SONGS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN INSTRUMENTALS, ESPECIALLY WHEN ACCOMPANIED BY IMAGES, FILM SCORES IN PARTICULAR….MUSIC THAT EVOKES A SCENE, SOUND AS A PRELUDE TO ACTION AND MOVEMENT.
WE DECIDED TO RECORD A CD OF ALL INSTRUMENTALS SO THAT GROOVE AND FEEL, MELODY AND HARMONY, COULD BE FULLY ENJOYED, UNENCUMBERED BY LYRICS. PLUS, I DIDN’T WANT TO PAY SOME VOCALIST TO SIT AROUND SMOKING CIGARETTES, TALKING ON THEIR CELL PHONE, WHILE WAITING THEIR TURN TO RUIN A PERFECTLY GOOD PIECE OF MUSIC. I RECOMMEND DANCING TO THESE SONGS ALONE, OR WITH A PARTNER, AS A PRELUDE TO ACTION…..MAN.

Like an evening in a private nightclub
This is a great CD, and long overdue! I've been going to see Lee's band perform live here in S.F. for years, and this CD accurately captures the feel of a live set (my home stereo system includes a Denon amplifier that has a "jazz club" setting, which uses a reverb and tone profile to even further create this effect).

Beyond the superb audio characteristics of the disk is the program list itself. The sequence of tracks flows along naturally like a live set, with the energy of the performances ebbing and flowing naturally, just like an evening out a nightclub. My only issue was that when I went to order a Manhattan, I suddenly realized that I was actually still in my apartment and not down at the Rite Spot. (I'm going to send one of these CDs to my sister in Philly, in order to try to confirm this effect.)

YOW!
