ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
I’m so happy that I was able to get this through before 2017 was over! Thank you for all who have been cheering me on during this process (particularly once you knew I was in the process of doing a release towards the last quarter of 2017)

The plan was to have this out a couple of months earlier…and even if I’m not crazy about not being on point with goals, I think now is just the right time, I managed to get the album cover photo, a version which I didn’t even think about until I was going through the process. The result was also a couple of images for future albums!

Additional Track Notes:

The Pale Rose:
---------------------

One of the ‘gifts’ I got after crossing paths with the film ‘Before I Fall’. The idea came when I noticed myself constantly thinking about anything related to the film, the book, and a script (a pilot for the TV adaptation --- you can request a PDF of the current version from me...though if you NEED to read it…draft #2 is available online, just search using my Q&A and Reddit Handle) I was writing. Then I just thought: ‘I keep thinking about what would happen when Sam and Kent are both in this mid-40’s…so why not just try if I something interesting would happen if I just immerse myself in film scenes and read the books?

Was initially titled: 'The White And Red Rose' --- then I remembered Kent used 'pale' in the film, so somehow the revamped name had a much better ring (it sounded more 'them')

Eventually while letting that sit at the back of my mind and looking through the notes I had…I came up with one track (‘Sam Sees Kent’) then this one. Then a third (‘The McKingston Tenth Wedding Anniversary”).

There are more…sitting to be freed! I’m saving them up…in hopes that they might ‘mature’ for the 2018 album release. Yep…it’s going to be interesting as I’m aiming to do to an album release each year (for the next 4 albums)…and the process of releasing this album helped me get into my groove more…and seeing the yearly release a possibility because I’ve managed to build up material (the album covers are one of them!!!) and find the best strategy on helping my mind along during the track development and recording process.

Alicia Finally Decides
-----------------------------

I struggled to get to grips while listening to the first third of the track, because it was so confusing, considered even changing it. But then realised the track itself got easier to listen to as it went on. It basically reflects how I would feel if Alicia did finally decide (She was on the fence all 7 seasons, even though there were glimpses that she has made a decision) who her life partner is going to be.

As my #Awesome10k entry on Tumblr (No. 81) reflects (Use the tag #The Good Wife or #Will Gardner), I am among the viewers of ‘The Good Wife’ who would want her to decide towards the end of Season 1, so she could start moving on by Season 2.

After listening to the track a number of times, I’ve gotten ideas on doing a video for it. Particularly to reflect the stops and starts. (Possible train footage?)

A Rainy Day Insight
---------------------------

This one sat in development for awhile --- as an idea I recorded maybe early in 2017 then it sat there for about 10 months for me to only find out that it is fine on its own.

Patrick Doubts
--------------------

From memory, I think I’ve only watched ‘Gone Baby Gone’ once. That’s all the way through. When I did attempt to watch it a number of years later...I struggled to get through a couple of the early scenes. Though when I jumped towards the last couple of scenes and watched, an idea came to score the point when Patrick finds himself with two choices. At first I thought he would cave to pressure but he sticks to his guns…and stays consistent with his values.

I think this track is going to serve as a reminder for me next time I find myself in that position. No matter if it’s a small deal…or a big deal. Because small things add up.

One last surprise while listening to this track during the finalisation process was how much I was liking the piano sound (it sounded like a nice upright piano).

The McKingston Tenth Wedding Anniversary
------------------------------------------------------------

Once again! Another ‘Before I Fall’ Inspiration – though this one is more set during the timeline of the pilot I wrote. It’s based on a ‘ship’ (Tumblr term) name combining Kent and Sam’s last names: ‘McFuller’ + ‘Kingston’.

5 AM
------

A remnant from an idea while I was completing the previous album (Life Sound – While developing the track ‘7 AM’). When I started to explore the idea from my notes, it sounded a bit like ‘7 AM’ so…looking at my options I just spent a couple of hours looking at what I could come up with after letting myself explore options based on that (Standard Tuning / Capo on 3rd fret)

Not sure what to make of it yet, as I wasn’t ‘scoring’ anything while recording it. From the feel of it, it seems more like a writing prompt kind of track. Somehow while listening to it, I’m imaging closing credits of a film…or maybe more an anxiety montage. Or thoughts that keep one awake…for an hour or so…before bed.

The Lava Pun
------------------

Had the idea of the set of notes (to hum) that’ll be the foundation for the melody, after watching the short film ‘Lava’ from Pixar. The groove was somehow in my head (maybe more the humming melody while the groove was danging around there somewhere?) while listening to the music playing (and thinking maybe it would be good to have it accompanied with just a ukulele).

That idea got kicked when I had a look at it a year later and decided it works on its own. Kind of quirky in a way --- which I thought I can throw in the album without it sticking out so much. Was I successful? :)

Sam Sees Kent
----------------------

Somehow, I think this would have been the first of the 'McKingston Tracks' that would have bubbled up as an idea. I think I didn't get invested in the film when 'Kent saw Sam'. So when did Sam see Kent? I think it would have been when they had the 'hero' conversation. Somehow I feel like I should also write a track called: 'Ry finds Sam and Kent', which Ry Russo-Young did while directing the film.

Walk In My Shoes (Two ‘B Side’ Tracks)
-----------------------------------------------------

Initially these were a giveaway for those who purchased the single. I’ve decided to add them in this album (Track #1 underwent a slight tweak with volume levels)

You’ll Notice version #2 (Track 16) – has that slight extra hum, but then while I was playing it…I thought it turned out pretty okay. Compared to it Track 15 (Version #1), which sounds much cleaner.
