Back in the sixties, dancing in the Philippines gets a shot-in-the-arm with the birth of the Off-beat Cha Cha Cha. A direct descendant of two internationally famous dance sensations: the Latin Cha Cha Cha and the Occidental Off-beat, the wonderfully uninhibited dance has already made a beachhead in Japan, Taiwan, Okinawa, and other neighboring countries in Asia. Returning Filipino and foreign travelers abroad, specially in Tokyo, have confirmed that more people are being introduced to this palm-fringed bastion in the Far East through the Filipino Off-beat Cha Cha Cha. The Japanese have a slick word for it: “Dodompa”. So then it is a healthy sign that time is not so distant when the crazy steps of this Philippine best-seller may sweep through the neon-lit portals of Broadway, LasVegas, and Europe.
