Album Notes
"I first heard Les Finnigan's "Counterpoint Conundrum" about the same time that news broke of Notre Dame Cathedral's burning, and there was some initial doubt that its famous bells would ever toll again. The opening track was somehow a reassuring omen - Finnigan's acoustic guitar ringing bell-like and resolute. Contrapuntal music is the focus here, in title and execution, but with a modern spin using a beautifully resonating steel-string guitar (an Alberico OM), open tunings and hybrid picking (fingerstyle and flat-picking). This is a beautifully conceived project which integrates excellence all-around in composition, performance, design and recording." - Alan Fark, Minor 7th

"Finnigan is unquestionably highly technically proficient, but his beautiful music is also loaded with soul and invention. On Counterpoint Conundrum, he amply displays these facets of his performance and compositional chops, but in a restrained, meditative and courtly manner reflective of contrapuntal music’s Renaissance/Baroque origins."
- David Morrison, Folk Radio UK

"A fixture on the acoustic guitar scene... He’s a master, and tunes such as Bowl O’ Cocobolo are just so uplifting that it’s great for the darker winter days."
- Stuart Derdeyn, The Vancouver Sun

Album liner notes and credits:

Counterpoint is the art of combining two or more independent melodic lines in a composition. This is a very simplified definition of a difficult style of composition that requires much attention to detail. I have been composing contrapuntal music for over twenty years and to create an album dedicated to this style has always been a goal of mine. It is a unique project because I am a Canadian composer in the twenty-first century writing in a style that was most popular in the Baroque period in Europe. I am following the compositional rules of the counterpoint tradition, and yet the presentation is unusual because it is performed on steel string acoustic guitar, predominately in open and alternate tunings, and using hybrid picking (finger-style and flat-picking). Counterpoint Conundrum is an opportunity for me to add a modern and alternative source to this underrepresented style of composition in acoustic guitar music and contemporary music. It is a practice that should not be forgotten.

The guitar on this album is an Alberico OM model with a German spruce top and Cocobolo back and sides. It was recorded using a matched pair of Miktek C5 condenser microphones through a Pendulum Audio SPS-1 pre-amp, a Sunrise magnetic pick-up through an ART Project Series Tube MP with a Tung-Sol 12AX7 tube, a Lexicon MX-300 reverb, an Apogee Duet interface running at 24 bit / 96 kHz, and no edits or overdubs were used.
