Album Notes
Southern Sounds Sessions was recorded in the heart of the Gulf Coast at Southern Sound Productions using all Gulf Coast musicians. Les Kerr writes songs from his heart and that is evident in this collection of tunes. From Southern Belles to Pool People, from his grandmother’s Button Box to a Midriff Mama from New Orleans, Les describes his world in words and music.
A native of Mississippi, Les Kerr carries on the tradition of storytelling and songwriting found in his home state.
“Railroads and sailboats are both part of my background,” Les says. “My grandfather’s favorite train was the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio’s Little Rebel and I sailed quite often to the Round Island Lighthouse mentioned in my song Destination: Gulf of Mexico. I love to write and sing about people I’ve met and places I’ve been and I hope these songs illustrate that.”
Les captures the spirit of the South in songs like Seductive Eyes and Dinner at Aunt Stella’s and modern day sun-worshipers in Pool People. The humorous “love” song If It Weren’t for You won an American Song Festival honor and always draws a laugh from listeners.
Southern Sound Sessions takes the listener on a trip filtered with unique places and fascinating people.
