Dis Funk Picks You Up!
Album producers and friends Tom and Annie, of McLoony Tunes (Winona MN) introduced me to Lew Hopson a while back . " When You Pick up Da Funk" is my current go--to selection in my car CD player. That means I really dig it. The title track immediately starts my thumbs slapping the steering wheel with a sort of Earth Wind and Fire feel meets Tower of Power horns. Lew is a great singer, the musicianship is spot--on and the production quality is as high as anything you'll hear today. Lew's grooves blend Latin, Afrikan, Jazz, R&B, Funk, Rock, World and even Classical, musical themes together in an amazing well--conceived and executed album. It feels great, it all makes sense and it all works. A few other tunes in particular: Be Ok is a superb medium tempo soul tune that always puts a smile on my face. To say "Chump Change" rocks is an understatement. Tom's guitar and Tim's bass showcase their R & R credentials. Background vocals by Annie et al, are soulful, sexy, superb. Rather than a bombastic send--off, the final song, Hell and Heaven, is a beautiful acoustic guitar ballad that really demonstrates Lew's incredible vocal range, tone and heart. Gary provides a wonderfully ethereal muted trumpet that not only solos, but questions and answers the vocals straight from heaven above.

The album is full of great tunes about love, hurt, hope and joy. I hope you buy it, play it, love it. Feel the funk and be ok.
