ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Growing up on a ranch outside of Napa, California, Lily Wilson discovered at a young age a thirst for new experiences and different cultures that has led her, guitar and journals in hand, all around the world.

With the soothingly honest timbre of her voice and her evocative depiction of human experience, Lily takes her listeners on a journey. We fly over the mountains of Patagonia. We watch the sunset from an L.A. sidewalk. All the while we feel the beat of universal truths: love, loss, and the evolution of our souls. Gaze through the eyes of these songs and see something you may already know, but may have forgotten.

Lily has released four C.D.s on which she has collaborated with top artists from London, Hawaii, Nashville and Los Angeles. She is currently touring to promote her latest release, "The Right Time."

What is not to like here?
I'd give Lily's terrific self-titled record five stars but unfairly, probably, I just can't often throw out five stars for an artist / songwriter after first hearing a record. But I feel safe in giving this a solid 4 stars among the fives of 2002 listens among female songstresses I like such as Kasey Chambers ("Barricades and Brickwalls"), Allison Moorer ("Miss Fortune") and especially Kim Richey's "Rise" and Kelly Willis' terrific new one, "Easy". But even talking about a songwriter I only just heard about last week in the same paragraph with those woman is saying a huge mouthful.

Great songwriting and a terrific version of Buddy Holly's "Well Alright" (who doesn't like Buddy Holly!)...an excellent choice of one cover for this nice flowing CD of well-written original songs. Lily's voice ranges from being reminiscent of Emmylou Harris, one of my all-time favorite singers, so that is NOT a bad thing...to sometimes hints of another favorite of mine, the aforementioned Richey. The tempos and moods shift from track-to-track to make up a nice little journey through Wilson's songwriting prowess. Two of the ten originals are cowrites and the musicianship is excellent with Lily on acoustic guitar, Jim West on electric, acoustic and steel, keyboards, programming and backup vocals on the tune "Hard to Shake". Kate Markowitz adds vocals on "Sidewalk Song" and Lee Ann Harris play percussion and David Carpenter, bass, throughout. Sax is played on the CD by Billy Clinton... is this THE Billy Clinton? I know he plays sax, too? The CD was produced and recorded/mixed by Jim West in Hermosa Beach CA and I can't recommend this album to you enough if you are someone like me, always looking to uncover another wonderful songwriter or voice. (or both!)

There is no date on this record so I've know idea when it came out. Lily's got another CD so I will have to track that down, too. Listen to a few of these songs on this site and buy the record, if you like folk, country, roots music and excellent vocals and songwriting in the setting of a solid band you will be happy. As I understand it she performs solo too and I am looking forward to catching her live at Rockin' Java Coffee House in the Freight, I think next week on the 5th of Nov 2002 (in the Haight, a Tuesday). With a CD this sweet I'd be surprised if her live act, band or solo, would be any less beautiful. If you play a Martin, cover Buddy Holly, sing and write this well and can play guitar, as far as I'm concerned you must be the real deal. Enjoy this one, folks! I sure am.
