ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Note From Susan & Craig:
"Openings" is a chronicle of our search for the divine. We are seekers of the Mystery, and as musicians we write songs that reflect that search.

We opened every recording session of this album with a prayer, asking the Beloved to bless the fruits of our labor, and infuse our recording with healing love and light.

Our musician friends who collaborated with us are some of the finest that Austin, Texas has to offer, but more important to us are their deep, beautiful hearts. This group includes Earthtone recording artist Shane O'Madden (Govinda) on violin, recording artist Oliver Rajamani on tablas, percussionist Paul Pearcy (Dixie Chicks), saxophonist Dan Torosian (Marcia Ball Band), organist Nick Connolly (Imperial Golden Crown Harmonizers), pianist Kay Sparks, violinist Javiar Chaparro, and bassist Glenn Kawamoto.

Info on the Songs -
"I Open To You, My Beloved" - we wanted to open the album with an invocation to the Beloved. This was actually the last track we recorded.

"The Way Of The Truth" - music by Craig with lyrics based on a poem by Sufi Shaykh Sidi al Jamal, with a chorus that says in arabic - the breath of God that enlivens everything, there is only God, and all thanks and praise be to God.

"There is a Light" - a song from Susan that deals with working with the shadow, and how to shine a light on those places in ourselves that we hide in.

"Persistence Of Vision" - this track from Craig is a sort of New Age/Reggae/Soul Feel-Good song about the power of Love and Forgiveness.

"Fairies and Fireflies Dance at Dusk" - is Craig's tribute to the Fairie Realm. Just close your eyes and you'll feel the wind from their wings as they fly by you.

"Ave Generosa" - a piece from 12th Century Mystic Hildegard of Bingen. Susan leads women's spirit song-circles called Hilde Girls using the music and teachings of Hidegard. Susan is solo a capella on this one.

"Lorica" - literally means breastplate, and refers to the ancient Celtic practice of saying a morning prayer invoking the power of Nature.

"Bobo Maley" - is a traditional chant from the Dagara tribe of Central West Africa, as taught by Malidoma Some, with a counter melody by Craig & Susan of the english translation - O Spirit, we are calling, come into my body, move me, inhabit me, and make me alive!

"Aramaic Lord's Prayer" - several years ago we were on a quest to learn how to pray. With hands on each other's hearts, we would practice saying the Lord's Prayer in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus. It's rich mystical text opened and led us to intimate conversations with God. Soon melodies and dance movements came to us for each line of the prayer, and the song began it's continuing, powerful hold on our hearts. We used 36 vocal tracks on this recording.

"Hay Una Mujer" - an a capella arrangement by Susan & Craig of this wonderful Holly Near song that is a tribute to the courageous women who have sacrificed their lives for the cause of peace. The divine feminine resides in the heart of every one of us. May we search for Her, embrace Her, and allow Her to love through us.

A great addition to any music collection!
After listening to this CD one night I had the greatest experience. I opened up mentally and spiritually to a life changing way of thinking. Openings is so aptly named. Singing along with Bobo Melay and the Aramaic Lord's Prayer is a human experience we should all share. I sing along with these interesting and different melodies every chance I get

"Light" helps rid the darkness
I encounted this CD after a near fatal car accident. I have to drive thru this intersection in the course of my daily life many times but last fall, on the anniversary of the accident, at almost the same time, as I drove thru, "There is a Light" was playing and I found that the words penetrated the darkness that had plagued me for 3 years. I found the freedom to overcome the strangle-hold this location had on me. There are many other songs on this CD that lift my spirit and I have come to embrace all of them. Thank you to Craig and Susan for "Opening" my way in this world.
