ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
SOMEWHERE IN IRELAND: A JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY

This book began to be written soon after I landed at Shannon Airport in 2010 to attend Writers’ Week in Listowel, County Kerry. The beauty of the land, the welcoming spirit of the people, the language, the clouds, the music, the ever-present reminders of history, all these set my pen in motion and the poems kept coming over the next two years.

The book grew from a story I wanted to tell, the story of how being in the land of my ancestors opened a door for me to my family’s history and to parts of myself I had never considered to be related to my Irish ancestry.

Irish author Joan McBreen commented: “I would say that at a psychic level Ireland has probably always been your first country! How come it took so long for you to get here?”

I hope you enjoy them.

Praise for SOMEWHERE IN IRELAND: A Journey of Discovery

In a strong, honest, confident voice, at once American and Irish, Linda Whittenberg leads us …on a fascinating journey across the years and miles, from the dark days of The Famine in County Clare, over oceans and deserts and back again to the 21st Century… The poems here are full of love, not to mention forgiveness and a deep understanding of where her people came from and the times and circumstances that drove them. Somewhere in Ireland should appeal to readers on both sides of the Atlantic.
--- John McGrath

John McGrath, writer, teacher, editor, manages Moybella Press which publishes the work of Irish writers, including his own book, Blue Sky Day.

Linda Whittenberg would have us know, indeed would have us see, feel and hear, with the poems and prose poems in Somewhere in Ireland…She deftly writes of Ireland and of the Irish in America both past and present. She will find readers everywhere who will make this book part of themselves.
--- Joan McBreen

Joan McBreen’s poetry is published widely in Ireland and abroad and has been broadcast, anthologized and translated into many languages.

* * *

This book-length narrative in poetry makes the search for Linda Whittenberg’s Irish roots a pleasure to read chiefly because we have real poems here, poems written out of necessity. I’m thinking it must be the Irish in her blood that makes so many of these poems sing. Like she herself says, “Sounds of a joyful hymn/sung in spite of sorrow.”
--- Tom Crawford

Tom Crawford is author of six books of poetry, and recipient of the Pushcart Prize, ForeWord Book of the Year, the Oregon Book Award for Poetry, and two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships.
