I was a fan of Lisa Ornsteins fiddling when she first recorded in old time style . But I lost track after she moved to Canada and started playing French-Canadian. Now that I become a fan of this music I've rediscovered her. I'm not well versed in this type of fiddling but I think I can safely say that this ranks right up at the top of the scale in execution and tune selection.

The Magic Paintbrush: Pure magic! Le pinceau magique :magnifique!
Lisa Ornstein works her musical magic again in this new CD. This goes beyond just 2 people playing tunes together - it is a musical conspiracy! I have not been able to stop humming the tunes from this record since I first listened to it. Lisa and Dan take you along on a whirlwind journey through Québec, Ireland and the Appalachian Mountains, stopping along the way for the occasional old-tyme and contra-dance all the while offering original compositions featuring their individual and combined musical mastery. Definitely worth getting for your musical library. There's something here for everyone!

The Magic Paintbrush - Wonderful new CD from Lisa Ornstein and Dan Compton
I recently purchased Lisa Ornstein and Dan Compton’s new CD “The Magic Paintbrush” and found myself listening to it over and over again. This is a wonderful new CD with lots of great tunes that show the depth and diversity of their musical experiences and musicianship. The CD takes you on a musical journey of traditional Quebecois and American “old time” music of Eastern North America ranging from Quebec to Kentucky to North Carolina and back again. While the tunes come from diverse locations and/or experiences, they all fit together extremely well. There are a number of great traditional tunes as well as original tunes composed in the genre by Dan and Lisa. One of my favorites is the Tommy Jarrell set “Greasy Strings/Sugar Foot Rag/June Apple” – this is a wild and high-flying set of tunes which Dan and Lisa play to perfection. Another highlight is the original set “The Little Bear/Hommage a Ojnab” with tunes that were composed by Lisa and Dan respectively. Lisa’s mature and often fantastic fiddling and Dan’s tasteful and complementary guitar accompaniment often give you the feeling that there are more than two musicians playing here. It is easy to get lost in the music and, if you close your eyes, you can feel as if you are listening to music on a front porch in the hills of North Carolina or at a Quebecois dance party. I highly recommend this CD to anyone interested in great traditional music.

Buy this CD!
The other reviewers have said it all, pretty much. To those reviews I will add that Lisa has over the years learned and helped to preserve great tunes from old master fiddlers, many of whom are not with us any more. Her fiddling is the real deal, backed up by Dan's tasty guitar playing and tunes. My personal favorite track is #5, an electrifying medley of Wm. Stepp's "Rebels Raid" (Ky.), and two tunes from Québéc: Reel du Lièvre and Paresis (from Aimé Gagnon and Louis Boudreault, respectively). We owe a great debt of gratitude to Lisa for helping to keep this music going, a debt we can repay in small part by buying this CD!
