ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Lisa Donahey’s new holiday album Christmas In Our Soul is as festive, heartfelt and irrepressible as the multi-talented artist herself, offering a fresh, freewheeling mix of the sacred and secular, with vibrant and sophisticated new twists on familiar classics, hymns and slightly more obscure gems rendered new again via the singer’s artful blend of soulful sensitivity and playful, sassy style. Showcasing the grand eclecticism that has defined her multi-faceted career as a recording artist and performer, Lisa infuses the 13-track collection with an array of musical influences, from cool, sultry jazz to R&B/blues, novelty tunes, with a few dashes of country and Broadway.
While most contemporary Christmas and Holiday albums seem designed as overly familiar, easy listening background music for holiday parties, Christmas In Our Soul stands out with fresh surprises Lisa gifts us with from track to track. Among these are three compelling, never before recorded songs co-written and produced by two-time Academy Award®, Grammy and Golden Globe nominee Allan Rich: the funky, upbeat earworm “It’s Gonna Be a Hot Hot Christmas” and the lush ballads “Christmas Without You” and “Christmas in Our Soul.”
Rather than reach for the tried and true, a playlist of “we’ve heard ‘em over and over” kind of tunes, Lisa and her nine-time Juno Award winning producer, Chris Gestrin, create pure magic with off the beaten path, rarely recorded holiday tunes from the Great American Songbook era and beyond.
Combining her masterful storytelling abilities with her innate skills as a people person, Lisa has captivated audiences throughout her native Southern California and beyond with critically acclaimed performances that tap into her passions for everything from classic Top 40 pop, R&B, rock, Great American Songbook and big band standards to musical theatre, country, novelty tunes, classical and even her own colorful mashup style, “jazzbaret.” Her sold out shows have included “Just a Broad and a Big Band” and “A Summer Night of Soul.”
Over the past few years, Lisa has created, produced and starred in a multitude of diverse large ensemble showcases at such Los Angeles hotspots as Upstairs at Vitello’s Supper Club and Catalina Jazz Club, as well as large performance centers in Orange County. Her cleverly titled show “Just a Broad and a Big Band (and show with a Little Big Band, Too) features dynamic orchestral arrangements of classics by the likes of Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and Count Basie. Stepping into the spotlight with her full 15-piece Big Band (and sometimes a “Little Big Band,” adapted for smaller settings), Lisa brings to life the era’s jazz and swing stylings, taking her audience on a journey of the great big bands, past present and future. Her previous albums include She’s Got It Covered (2007) and Takes on Broadway (2014).
While attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, Lisa honed her formidable chops as an entertainer and learned the ins and outs of commercial pop recording and the music industry. She received the coveted Outstanding Performer of the Year award, was chosen as the Convocation speaker and singer, performed in numerous concerts and was chosen to sing for Sting, jazz great Nancy Wilson and The Manhattan Transfer – regaling these greats with fresh performances of their best-known songs. Lisa lives in Los Angles and continues to record, sing on sessions for TV and film and perform live regularly.
