"One hot fiddler!" - Cyndi Lauper
"Hauntingly emotional vocals" - L.A. Times
"Genius!" - Pete Seeger (on Lisa's Grammy-winning settings of Woody Guthrie lyrics)
Best known as a member of The Klezmatics and the downtown Celtic band Whirligig, Lisa Gutkin is celebrated for her world-class fiddling. She now celebrates her first solo CD "From Here On In," featuring not just her fiddle but her voice on six warm and welcoming songs, plus a host of very special guests.
Lisa is a Grammy-winning songwriter for her settings of Woody Guthrie's lyrics on the Klezmatics CD “Wonder Wheel." (Two of these songs appear on "From Here On In.") She's performed on Broadway with Sting in his production "The Last Ship," written music for (and appeared on) Sex & The City, written the score for a Mabou Mines production, and was awarded a MacDowell fellowship. Lisa's affinity for songs began while working in the legendary Fast Folk Collective with Suzanne Vega, Shawn Colvin, and Richard Shindell, and later with Natalie Merchant, Susan McKeown, and Pete Seeger. Most recently she was in Paula Vogel's Off-Broadway hit "Indecent" as a performer and award-winning co-composer.
All along, this consummate musician and sideman has secretly longed to sing her own songs. To date Lisa’s songs have only been recorded by others, most namely the wonderful Susan McKeown. On "From Here On In," Lisa sings. She also accompanies herself on tenor guitar and fiddle, and is joined by some of the musicians she most loves working with: Will Holshouser, Byron Isaacs, Roger Squitero, Buddy Cage, Cillian Vallely, Steve Holloway, Vaneese Thomas, and Fiona McBain. Produced by John Lissauer (Leonard Cohen, Loudon Wainwright), these songs are honest and warm. "From Here On In," Lisa invites you to feel right at home.
