Album Notes
The FIRST TIME, LONG TIME EP chronicles the first solo recording adventures of Lisa Said, an Egyptian-American songstress, drawing from the music of her childhood in the hills of Tennessee: rock oldies, old-timey string-band folk, 70’s jump-suited soul, and Arabic rhythms. These are songs she wrote in her darker, in-between days, during breaks from playing in bands with more garage-rock, punk, and power-pop edges respectively and then while taking a six year hiatus from playing out altogether. FIRST TIME, LONG TIME was released November 17, 2015.

Now living on the outskirts of Washington, DC, Lisa recorded these songs with legendary punk producer/engineer Don Zientara at Inner Ear Studio throughout 2015. Said and Zientara entered the studio with the intention of finding a sweet spot between early 70s folk-rock and North African beats. This project was jump-started with the contributions of Andrew Toy, a Washington DC drummer who can play real Middle Eastern percussion, the kind of drummer Lisa had been searching for for years.

Fueled by pistachios and bourbon, these recording sessions took the long route—some easy roads, some sharp turns and meanderings. She crossed paths with some great local talent who connected her to still more talented collaborators. The music felt its way through the dark, arriving at last in the most pleasantly lit room imaginable.

Mostly tracked in Arlington, VA at Inner Ear, some contributions stemmed from Southern towns such as Black Mountain, NC where Seth Kauffman (Floating Action) added bass and guitars. The songs came back in time to receive a truly magical treatment from DC legend Jon Carroll (Starland Vocal Group) on piano and organ. Then they were packed up again and went back South to Nashville, TN and Atlanta, GA to get mixed by Bill Reynolds (Band of Horses) and Jason Kingsland.

This was Lisa's first time co-producing—needing to get that North African rhythm with shoulder shimmy and hip swing just right. Zientara's patience and mastery of the medium along with Said's unique curiosity worked hand-in-hand to bring these songs to life. With the opportunity to work with giants, an alternate, more appropriate album title might have been 'The Education of Ms. Said' or 'It Takes a Village'.

There are more songs to come along in 2016 as a full album. FIRST TIME, LONG TIME is the first baby that's arrived after the first nine months.
