'SPEAK' reviews -

“The topography crosses Jazz, Indian and African terrain…. Young opens with the stunning solo machine-gun fire of wordless vocals where the rhythms are repeated, extended and then moved across the pulse….. electrifying” Leon Gettler The Age 1999

‘Young has developed a fine vocal instrument, dark and rich, with a rare confidence when improvising. ‘ David Dupont CADENCE June 2000

“Young held the space effortlessly, scatting to the syncopated rhythms of the aslatuas…I looked around; the audience was transfixed” Jessica Nicholas The Age review - Bennetts Lane performance

Lisa Young has studied music across a wide spectrum, from Jazz and Contemporary Improvised music to the aural traditions of India, Africa and Bulgaria. She is renown as an exceptionally creative vocal stylist and improviser incorporating Indian and African elements in her work. She has completed a Master of Music Performance (Voice) at the Victorian College of the Arts, which included a thesis in Konnakkol - South Indian vocal percussion.

She is a founding member of vocal and percussion group COCO'S LUNCH. They have recorded 5 CDs of original music for both adults and children, receiving 2 ARIA nominations in 2007, and have toured exstensively throughout Australia, Canada, Europe and Asia.

Her composition ‘Thulele Mama Ya’ (with Coco’s Lunch) won ‘Best Folk/World Song’ in the CARA awards in the USA, and in 2007 her jazz quartet’s most recent album ‘GRACE’ won ‘Best Australian Jazz Vocal Album 2007’ at the ‘Bell’ Awards.
