Album Notes
"... Winne's heavenly vocal tones and deep vibrato are stunning" -David Malachowski, writer for Metroland Magazine and The Times Union and former band member for Shania Twain

Lise Winne began playing guitar at age 10. She was also a voracious reader and prolific writer and, in the beginning, had designs on being a novelist, poet, essayist and lyricist. During the time she attended college, she entered some creative writing contests at a writer's conference and received top awards in poetry and fiction from such renowned writers as William Bronk (National Book Award winner) and Paul Auster (well-known screenwriter, novelist and poet). Afflicted with severe asthma, Lise never thought that a career as a singer would ever be a possibility, however after many years of treatment, a path became possible in music and in art. She received an art scholarship in college, a BS in Studio Art, an MS in Art Education and split her time after graduation, to varying degrees, between art and music.

To date, Lise has recorded 4 full-length recordings: "Christmastime" in 1996, "Come To Me In Dreams" in 1998, "Wing'd With Hopes: New Interpretations of Renaissance Songs" in 2001 and "The Goldenrod" in 2004.

"Wing'd With Hopes" and "The Goldenrod" were recorded with Scott Petito, known for his work with many notable acoustic acts in the country including James Taylor, the Band, Jay Unger and Molly Mason, Rory Block, Anne Hills, Leslie Ritter and Amy Fradon, and many more. Petito also plays on Lise's albums and was instrumental in producing them.

Besides Lise's solo performances, she also is the member of two bands, Saratoga Faire and The Spirites Consort. Saratoga Faire primarily plays folk, instrumentals (featuring hammered dulcimer and fiddle) and originals and they are at work on their first CD. The Spirites Consort has been all over the map, performing classical, Renaissance, jazz, folk and originals, depending on the concert venue.

Lise drew primarily from the Spirites Consort for their breadth of musical styles and abilities for both the "Wing'd With Hopes" CD and "The Goldenrod" CD.

Musicians and instrumentation for "The Goldenrod" include the following:
Lise Winne: vocals, harmony vocals, nylon and steel string guitars, recorder, whistles
Jeff Belding: nylon and steel string guitars, electric guitar and effects, mandolin
Joe Davoli: violin, baritone violin
Rick Eckberg: double bass, electric bass
Scott Petito: electric basses, electric sitar, percussion
Jason Kessler: nylon and steel string guitars
Brian Melick: percussion
Jim Lestrange: Hammered dulcimer, harmony vocals, electric bass
Mark Gardner: soprano saxophone

The making of "The Goldenrod" was made possible in part by a grant from The New York Foundation for the Arts.

Jim Lestrange did the photography, layout, design and graphics. The paintings and drawings on the inside sleeves were done by Lise. Some additional tracking was done at Electric Wilburland Studio by William Russell and Matthew Saccuccimorano and at Spirit 11 by Sean Flynn. But, Scott Petito did the lion's share of tracking and all of the mixing and mastering. The album was produced by Scott and Lise.

"I find the musical arrangements and instrumentation on The Goldenrod quite delightful!...Your songs are fascinating, and I love the unusual musical twists and turns they take. The ambitious nature of lyrics (in terms of vocabulary, imagery, rhyming pattern, poetic points of view, and overall introspective point of view) makes for an unusually demanding listening experience...I commend you for a beautiful and ambitious album."
----Walt Haake, program host for "The Mists of Avalon" radio show, WDVR, Sargeantsville, NJ

"Singer-songwriter Lise Winne is back with her fourth album, 'Goldenrod' on Lilac/Goldenrod Records. Recorded at Scott Petito's NRS Studios in Catskill, the album is a diverse collection of songs incorporating elements of folk, new age and Renaissance music. Especially intriguing is 'Love Find Your Way to Me,' with Winne's winning vocals accompanied by a swirling, almost psychedelic electric sitar."
----Greg Haymes, Albany Times Union

"Singer-songwriter presents originals grounded in equal parts folk and classical traditions."
----Sing-Out Magazine

better than soundclips reveal!
This is an even better album than I thought it would be. My favorite songs on the album aren't even on the sound clips and include Where Did You Go, Perhaps Butterflies and Halloween Arrive. And even the sound clips that are here don't show the buildup of instrumentation in the songs. Some of the endings are completely unexpected and tastefully done. Then there are her drawings inside the CD sleeves which help to make this a very special package. You can go to her website where there are many more of her works of art on display there. Too much talent for one lady!

We heard Lise Winne and her band perform for the first time at a packed First Night event in upstate NY and then again for a second time at a dance festival event. We are a couple from Vermont and we realized we were witnessing one hell of a talented group. Lise's songwriting is truly unique. Her band does not sound like other bands. We bought her "Wing'd With Hopes" album and then had to buy "The Goldenrod" too after it came out. They are very different CDs, but both are first-rate.
