Album Notes
When Little Jake Mitchell and the Soul Searchers look out from their bandstand these days, they see the R&B renaissance happening in front of them. Audiences are discovering, or rediscovering, the energy, showmanship, musicianship and style that created the first huge crossover audience for R&B, back in the day.
Jake Mitchell played a part in that first chapter of R&B history, when he toured and performed in now-famous venues such as Harlem’s Apollo Theater. And, Mitchell and the Soul Searchers band have now become a force in the 21st century resurgence of the R&B style.
“Style is meaning,” say the artists. Jake and the band took that idea to heart long ago. They support the authenticity of their repertoire with song selection, arrangements, appearance, choreography, and soulful stage presentation.
Arrangements have ‘60s R&B style, with enough variety to add a contemporary feeling. Every note
you will hear was played and sung by the musicians in the band. The rest of the world may listen to music built up from countless samples, sequences and professional session players, but the performances on this album are energetic, tight and real!
The group’s musicianship and professionalism are rock solid. Anchored by R&B veterans from the famous “Chitlin Circuit” whose friendships go back several decades, the group inspires one another to the highest levels of performance. The rhythm section is tight and funky. The horns are playing together. If you think that’s easy, cruise over to YouTube and listen to the looseness of some of the original hits’ horn sections. You may not have noticed then, but you will now.

Here’s a look at the performances:

"I Got to Know (The Feeling Is Real)" It’s about the “B” in R&B—The Blues. This one has it all: a jump tempo blues, synchronized riffs from the horns, falsetto octaves from Jake, stop-time punches from the rhythm section. The band goes out on a monologue over arranged horn riffs, a favorite way to take a blues tune home. Jake’s original release was in 1967 as the “B” side to Not A Chance In A Million. He was an Impact Records artist at that time, singing over a big band arrangement in a Detroit recording session.
"Nomad Woman" turns to a minor key to tell of an exotic desert encounter. All hands sing on the title intro line, followed by a walkabout through the elements of the R&B genre. Nomad Woman expands the limits of storytelling material, and matches the musical arrangement to the story.
"Not a Chance in a Million" This is an audience favorite on two continents, a reprise of Jake’s Northern Soul blockbuster hit. Whether he sings it as Jake, or as “Jock Mitchell” for his UK audiences, this song has an honored place in Jake’s repertoire, and hasn’t lost a step along the way.
In "I Got the Last Ha, Ha, Ha," the storyteller has the last laugh on a busted romance. An easy backbeat takes us through a light-hearted love tussle. It may be just a joke to her, but baby, Little Jake’s got a soulful twinkle in his eye, a new love and the last ha, ha, ha. Sharon McMahan wrote this song in July 1972, shortly before Clive Davis brought her to Columbia Records in 1973. Revered as a Northern Soul / Modern Soul diva by fans in the UK, McMahan has a long list of charted songs to her credit.
"Work With Me Annie" is a song with a storied past, when it was considered too suggestive by the media in 1954. First written and released by Hank Ballard, then unsuccessfully suppressed, Work With Me Annie was rearranged for the mainstream by Jake in 1966. In this contemporary version it rocks as hard as it ever did.
"Don’t Let the Green Grass Fool You" This hard-swinging vocal gets support from the Hammond B3 organ, punched up by a sparse, energetic horn arrangement. Don’t let the green grass fool you, when you belong “…right here in Little Jake’s heart.”
"Turn On Your Love Light" is a rousing fast shuffle that will get you moving. The horn section intro brings Jake and the band in for some call-and-response singing, followed by a romping tenor solo. The band lays down a sustained riff, and Jake Mitchell shows his chops with a dramatic held note before the horn section wraps it up and takes it home.
"I Found a Love" reinterprets Jake’s original recording of this song, which was contemporary with Wilson Pickett’s hit version. Vocal harmony over percussion and organ, and a gospel feel, set a dramatic mood right away. Staccato horn riffs provide just the right punctuation. Followed with a soaring vocal, wide dynamic range, stop-time phrasing, and the full vocabulary of a classic R&B band, I Found a Love puts us front row center for a tale of heartbreak.
With "634-5789," Wilson Pickett turned a phone number into an international crossover hit in 1965, with no area code required. In this recording, a quick drum flourish kicks Jake and the Soul Searchers straight into cruising speed, with a backbeat shuffle under a tight horn section intro. Jake’s strong vocal and the band’s harmony move the tune along with the confidence of somebody who knows, that phone call is coming "In the Midnight Hour."
"Little Bluebird" is a minor blues, with Jake’s vocal over an arrangement that brings in the whole Soul Searchers band and horns. The intensity builds during Little Jake’s conversation with Charlie Blade’s “Bluebird” tenor. Reminiscent of Johnnie Taylor’s live show band arrangement, this song shows how R&B could explore moods and adapt arrangements to create variety in the repertoire.
"Free at Last" is an inspirational look back. “I remember a long time ago…” flows into a story of hope and optimism. The song rises to its crescendo with a piccolo trumpet accompaniment and a strong, dramatic ending featuring Little Jake and the Soul Searchers’ soaring harmony.
Harking back to tradition, and looking forward to the future--there’s no end in sight for Little Jake Mitchell and the Soul Searchers.
