Album Notes
The first William Kennedy Piping Festival was organised in 1994 by Brian Vallely, the director and founder of Armagh Pipers Club. The Festival was named in honour of the blind craftsman from Tandragee who greatly improved the design and functioning of the uilleann pipes. It was originally intended to be a one-off celebration in the context of a year-long Armagh City Council initiative entitled ‘Armagh Together’, but such was the reaction it was decided to make it an annual event. Featured pipers that first year were Allan MacDonald, John Rooney, Brendan Ring, Hamish Moore, Fred Morrison and Diarmaid Moynihan as well as members of Armagh Pipers Club.

The Festival has steadily grown in stature and reputation since then and is now regarded as one of the most prestigious of its kind, having hosted some of the most highly regarded and influential pipers and groups from all of the main piping traditions from across the globe. The release of this CD marks the 25th edition of the Festival and also the 250th anniversary of William Kennedy’s birth. This compilation is respectfully dedicated to him and to the pipemakers of later generations.

This collection is not an attempt at cataloguing the vast world of the bagpipe in all its guises but rather a snapshot of our festival. As such, our own biases and preferences are very much reflected in the choice of material. Our goal has always been to try and place our own music in the context of the broader piping world and to challenge stereotypical views of piping and traditional music in general. We hope this compilation reflects this and also helps recreate some of the electric atmosphere of those special nights!

Armagh Pipers Club
Armagh Pipers Club was founded in 1966 with the aim of promoting interest in the uilleann pipes. The club rapidly expanded to include other instruments and through weekly classes and a groundbreaking series of tutor books they have succeeded in introducing traditional music to thousands of children and adults. It has now become one of the largest traditional music teaching centres in Ireland and currently offers up to 50 classes per week across a wide range of instruments to over 200 students, drawn from Armagh and seven neighbouring counties.

Irish Traditional Music Archive
When Armagh Pipers Club inaugurated the William Kennedy Piping Festival in 1994, the guest speaker was Nicolas Carolan, founding Director of the Irish Traditional Music Archive. The Archive, then in its infancy, had recently begun field work activity, so it was suggested by Nicholas that they return to record events the following year. The Festival organisers agreed, and Nicholas along with Glenn Cumiskey arrived at Drumsill House Hotel in 1995 to begin the recording and cataloguing of the Festival which has continued to this day. They have built up an incredible resource of material and their continued attendance and endorsement serves as an important validation of our efforts.
We would like to thank all of the ITMA Field recording staff for their work in collecting this material over the years. Following on from Nicholas and Glenn were Jackie Small, Orla Henihan, Treasa Harkin, Niall Hackett, Mícheál Ó Catháin, Eoghan Neff, Danny Diamond, Brian Doyle, Joan McDermott, Ian Lynch, Piaras Hoban and Alan Woods.

The material here was recorded between 2003 and 2017. Music from the earlier years was featured on our previous collection – WKPFCD001 – released in 2004. The performances are all 100% live with minimal editing. They were recorded in different venues with sometimes vastly different acoustic properties resulting in sound variation between some of the tracks.
