ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"Professional Gypsy" is a retrospective work of 30 years of Lois Prettyman's life as a songwriter. Also a talented writer (she works under the pen name L. Lee Starr) and artist, she left her career as a medical laboratory scientist in 2013 to fully devote herself to the arts. She's done a lot of different things during her lifetime and jokingly describes herself as suffering from "career ADD." This album and its title track "Professional Gypsy" were inspired by her choice to "ditch it all" and become a traveling artist.

The majority of her poignant and heartfelt lyrics are autobiographical and relate her three decade long struggle with mental illness. "The Bell Jar", inspired by the Sylvia Plath novel of the same name, discusses the overwhelming sense of isolation and desperation of enduring depression and the yearning its sufferers have to give in to the only answer--suicide . "No Secrets" explores the feelings of transparency and vulnerability one feels during the psychoanalytic process and the intrinsic need to fix the broken psyche.

Although it may seem so, not all Lois's songs are sad. There is an even mix of joyous with the depressing. Upbeat tunes are comfortably balanced with a few simple and moving piano ballads. Lois uses multi-track harmonization to complement her soothing mezzo soprano voice. She also recorded, mixed, and sequenced all the featured instruments in her tracks.

This is Lois's second released CD. She previously recorded "Metamorphosis" in 2003, a work of original Christian Contemporary songs. She also painted the cover art for this CD.
