ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Loops is a multi-faceted group, based around electric guitar, drum kit and electric bass. The trio is occasionally augmented by other musicians, as occurs on this C.D. and in many of their concerts. Loops' style has been described as "jazz-rock fusion with an Indian flavour".

Since its inception in 1995, Loops has been defining and re-defining the nexus where improvisation meets composition, where jazz meets classical music, and where acoustic sound meets electronic sound.

"Ek!" is a double CD and the band's second commercial album release.
Consisting of a core trio of Jonathan Dimond (electric bass, tabla), Jamie Clark (electric and acoustic guitar) and John Parker (drums and percussion), the band often augments itself with artists of such virtuosity and breadth as John Rodgers (violin), Soumya Chakraverty (sarod), and Gulfam Sabri (tabla). Loops has also performed in collaboration with projected film and early childhood theatre.
Loops has appeared in such festivals as "Pinnacles" (1996, 2001), the Brisbane International Festival of Music (1998, 2000), the Queensland Biennial Festival of Music (2001), and the Wangaratta Jazz Festival (2000). Loops was Ensemble in Residence at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Griffith University (2000, 2001). Loops competed as state finalists in the ABC’s innaugral "Improv Awards" (1999). New compositions were created for and premiered at most of these events.
The band has toured New South Wales, South Australia, and Victoria (2000, 2002) and has two Compact Discs of its own: "Recursion" (1999) and the double album "Ek!" (2001). The band is also featured on Jonathan Dimond's "Journeys: People, Places" (2005) and Loops/Topology's "Airwaves: 100 Years of Radio" (2006).

This has everything you need....
This has everything you need.... melody, rhythm, groove, structure, feeling - buy a bunch of these!

Pay particular attention to the lyric of G. S. T. - you'll never do Italian solfegg again!

I particularly enjoyed "Sitcom" because it takes several syntaxes and makes them behave as one. (If you understand this remark, you'll luv the album; if you don't understand this remark, it's okay and you still might like the album....)

"Bar" is very cool to dance to... (make sure you have your choreographer with you!)

Get this! ---, you won't be sorry. (And if you become sorry after listening to this, that would be sorriful in and of itself, so to speak....)

a very colourful, inspiring and rewarding listen
How is it possible to play, let alone think of, music like this? S'pose it takes a good measure of genius and a touch of madness!?! These are guys who obviously have a great relationship with their instruments and know where they are going with them, and each other. The rhythms, time signatures (thanks for the CD notes) and the rich tapestry of influences make this a very colourful, inspiring and rewarding listen. Vocals are simply beautiful. Encore.

Awesome compositions delivered by awesome performances
Ek brings out lots of brilliance colors from the guitar trio format. The compositions reveal an original voice that can
only be reached by some true hard work, and soul searching. Through a heap of humour and fun into the bag and you're in for a great ride!
Full of surprises,

fun, intriguing, sensorial, and vastly entertaining!
being not terribly au fait with this style of music, I was quite prepared to be a little out of my depth, thinking the music was technically brilliant, but not something I would enjoy listening to over and over. How wrong I was! This CD is so much fun to listen to! I particularly like the Indian influences, and found Ek!intriguing, sensorial and vastly entertaining!
