Album Notes
Il Partenzista means "the starter"; it's an italian calembour (partenza means departure), yet it represents the contrary of L'Arrivista, that means "social climber": while the social climber only wants to arrive to something, Il Partenzista wishes to at least start, to begin to do something.
Thus, we tried to do the same on this album.
This is the first album titled with my name, after making various cds as a sideman.
I put together a quintet composed by very good musicians, but above all my friends: Antonio Gallucci on saxophones, Francesco Di Giulio on trombone, Lorenzo Paesani on piano and Fender Rhodes, Dino Cerruti double and electric bass, as well as me on drums. We met at Siena Jazz International Jazz Master in 2008/2010
Again, we are "Partenzisti" having made a cd that is jazz as far as concerning the sound. There is an improvisational idea and harmonic-melodic ambients, that you would expect to find in a jazz album, but there is even more. Because, it contains all the kinds of music that I ever loved: from noir movies' soundtracks, free improvisation, irish traditional music, theatre stuff, ballads and clownerie music.
Within my live show we include cd's tracks but also some toy-compositions where the listeners become intelligent composers and/ or directors. We also have some recitative and improvised moments that try to balance the surreal and tensive, yet normal, flow of unexpected life.
One of the many things that I personally appreciate, about my project, is that from it comes out a music that not only seasoned jazz listeners like, but also those who usually say "I don't understand jazz".
Another thing I like, is that I had all this stuff in mind exactly as it is on the record.
