by Lori Lieberman

The song, “Watermensen” was a huge hit for the group, The 3JS, in the Netherlands. When Lori Lieberman heard it for the first time, she contacted Jan Dulles, the group’s lead singer, to inquire about writing an English lyric to the classic melody. While the original song, he explained, details the stories of how the people in the Netherlands are challenged by its waters, Lieberman spoke to him about how in the U.S., water has presented its own terrifying challenges with the recent Hurricanes on the East Coast and New Orleans. Hence, “Water” came to be. A new recording of a classic song, from the artist who inspired another timeless song, “Killing Me Softly”.

"When Roel Kruize Sr., the former head of EMI/Bovema first played “Watermensen” for me, I was so moved by the wonderful song and performance by the 3JS.
I contacted Jan Dulles, their lead singer, and asked if I could take a stab at writing an English lyric to their legendary composition. While Jan sent on a literal translation of the lyric, he expressed, rather skeptically, that its subject, (that water being a constant threat to the people of the Netherlands), could really be something people in the US could relate to. In an email, I mentioned our challenges and struggles in recent years with Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy, and he understood where I was coming from.
While it’s been a year since Sandy rocked the shores and homes of the people on the East Coast of the US, its devastation is still felt.
I wrote the lyric, “Water”—and used the theme as a backdrop, a metaphor for the helpless vulnerability within a turbulent relationship.
Following my recent concert at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, in which I looked back on a four- decade career that began with my original poem for “Killing Me Softly”, I also performed “Water” for the first time, and it was overwhelmingly received. I used the same musicians to record the song (vocals and acoustic guitar by me- along with Ryan MacMillan (Matchbox 20) on drums, Dan Lavery (Tonik, The Fray), on bass, Michael Eisenstein (Melissa Etheridge) on electric guitar, John Krovoza (Dixie Chicks) on cello, and from the Netherlands, Denise Jansen-Brand (Kees Kraynoord) on piano).
Engineered by Joseph Cali in Los Angeles, mixed by Wisseloord’s Ronald Prent and mastered by Grammy Award mastering wiz, Darcy Proper in the Netherlands.
I am so grateful that the 3JS allowed me to participate, and I hope I’ve done justice to their beautiful song".
