ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
LORI WILLIAMS - "OUT OF THE BOX"
DC Legend Lori Williams has a new project out called "Out Of The Box". Although she's been known in the Straight-Ahead Jazz ranks and is beloved in parts of Europe and Russia, this time, she's going in a different direction as she looks to expand her audience here in the US and abroad. She's not coming alone as she joins up with Tom Browne, Will Downing, Nathan East, and Maysa, to name a select few. Her second single - “Hold On" - features Tom Browne.

“Setlist unabashedly plays favorites, and Lori Williams is by any measure near the top of the favorites list. This D.C. vocalist’s instrument contains the kind of nuances that one could get lost in. She has the kind of attenuation and subtlety that we associate with jazz singing instantly—a kind of jazz-vocal ‘discipline,’ for lack of a better term. But Williams slips in hints—and sometimes dead giveaways—that she has packed away the kind of soul power that would make her a tremendous R&B or gospel singer. Perhaps it’s a sort of vocalist’s twist on Ernest Hemingway’s “iceberg theory”: What you hear on the surface is only about 10 percent of what’s really there. As it happens, what is there is crystalline clarity, perhaps the most precise articulation of any singer in town, and a range that will, when she runs it, produce shivers.” “She’s got a soft-edged, creamy voice that’s a natural vehicle for introspection, but also one that you could happily curl up and get lost in. It’s stunning, supple, subtle, sumptuous, soulful music—let’s call that the five S’s of Lori Williams, shall we?”
Michael J. West - The Washington City Paper

Vocalist extraordinaire, Lori Williams from the Washington DC market is hot on the trails following her 2016 “Behind The Smiles” release, this time entitled, "Out Of The Box". Unlike most of her previous releases, she turns the corner and stylizes in a more contemporary vein.

We re-introduced Lori last year and the response from "I Like the Way You Talk (To Me)" was overwhelming as she gained new fans at Smooth. This comes as no surprise as some of her music journeys have included crossing paths with the likes of Nathan East, Tom Browne and Maysa, all of whom have contributed to her newest offering. In addition, Will Downing has also made a quick cameo on the project as well as lending his talents on the new version of "Where's That Smile?", which features the aforementioned Maysa and Downing, but also DC vocalists Troy Sol Edler and Rayshun Lamarr (who made some noise on TV earlier this year on The Voice). East also joined the party, playing his signature
vocalese-bass solo phrasings on the title track.

Her follow up single is a catchy smooth track with an uplifting message entitled "Hold On", featuring a cool trumpet solo from the aforementioned Browne. If you don’t know yet, you’ll notice that her voice is undeniable, and her width of talent is immense.

The Washington, DC native shot into high exposure in Europe in the early 2010’s after being captured on tape singing a vocal-duo with vocal legend Bobby McFerrin.

Sit back and enjoy the sounds of Lori Williams as she goes down the path of Neo-Soul and Smooth Jazz with her latest album ”Out Of The Box",
produced by yours truly.

“Lori Williams is a special talent. She can seamlessly move from jazz to R&B where the listener can feel at home with her in either genre. It has been a pleasure working with her, as she has set the bar for vocalists to come. If you are not familiar with Lori Williams, check her out - you will not be disappointed!”
Terri Lyne Carrington - Three-time Grammy award winning Jazz drummer, composer, singer, record producer and entrepreneur.

"If you'd like to hear sensual tones encompassing beautiful colors and sublime phrasing...Listen to Lori Williams."
