Album Notes
"I eagerly await future music from this extremely talented woman."
~Bill Binkelman, ZoneMusicReporter.com

Lorrie Sarafin first heard the haunting sound of the Native American Flute in 1993 and was instantly captivated by its beauty. She bought her first flute in 1996 and took it out into the desert to learn how to play it. An avid hiker, Sarafin is fond of saying that it is the desert that taught her how to play; her teachers being the wind and all things in nature. Having first heard the flute at a 1993 R. Carlos Nakai concert at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts - Lorrie's musical journey came full circle when she herself appeared on three different stages at the 2003 Scottsdale Center for the Arts Festival. Check out her performance page at her official website.

Nature is what inspires Sarafin. "Being outside is like a balm for my soul. When I am in the desert and I can hear the quail, the doves, the cactus wrens, the coyotes, the hummingbirds and see javelina, jackrabbits, roadrunners, hawks, and all the various life forms which eke out their survival in this environment - I can feel the whole web of life and it's interconnectedness. What is reality? Is it the desert and nature? Or is it our daily working lives in the culture that has evolved around us? Do we all have a place and a path which will yet be revealed to us? Should we just blindly go through life not seeking out the mystery? Or do we take the chance and delve into the mystery? And what will happen if we do? What will happen if we don't?"

"Life is a Great Mystery. Sometimes the veil parts a little and I think I can see and understand some. But then the veil closes and I feel like what I thought I understood wasn't at all something that I understood and then I'm more confused than ever. I do believe that we are all greater than we think we are. That each of us has a part to play in this reality. That finding the balance is crucial to our survival and the planet's survival. Then again, maybe all that is just wishful thinking and we are no more than a few carbon based units occupying a world which will go on with or without us. I don't know. But I do know that on a clear night, away from the lights of civilization - I stare at the same stars which were viewed by my ancestors long ago and find myself pondering the Great Mystery and thinking about the reality of a small blue planet on the edge of a galaxy in an infinite universe..."

Excellent musical portrait of the desert southwest
Lorrie Sarafin's Second Wind is one the finest blendings of ambient textures and soundscapes with environmental effects and Native American-influenced music (flute, rhythms and percussion) that I've heard in a good long while. Her synth loops, keyboards and washes are particularly evocative, and the CD's engeering and production are first rate (at some points, you'll actually think you are smack dab IN the desert if you are wearing headphones, the mix is that well-done). Her flute playing is also excellent, subtle and soulful. If you're someone who is more fond of an ambient-like approach to music (as opposed to being a wooden flute lover), have no fear because this CD is still a solid choice since many tracks feature the electronics either in a prominent role or even solo (no flute). The mood varies from haunting to serene to mysterious to one of unmistakable ancient power, and all of the music is cinematic in its ability to paint visual images of the desert southwest. I highly recommend this CD if you're looking for a combination of Native-influenced flute with ambient music and nature sounds (along the lines of John Huling, for example).

Haunting, Spiritual, and Beautiful!
Lorrie's performance on her native American flute is so hauntingly beautiful. It takes you to a new level of mind and spirit. Each track is clear, distinct, and excitingly descriptive. You will walk through the Zen Gardens, you will float like the eagles, you will feel the heat of the desert and sense the desert creatures slithering past you. Her music will touch your soul. Her CD is a journey that will relax you physically, spiritually, and mentally. It's a beautiful listening experience.

Hauntingly beautiful, and soothing to the soul
Hauntingly beautiful, and soothing to the soul. Every time I listen, it takes me on a new journey. Press "play", close your eyes, and let the music take you away. From the uncommon beauty of Lorrie's Native American Flute, to the soundscapes that surround it, this is a must-have CD.
