Album Notes
“We Just Want To Be (The Graduate ReMix)” is a collaboration between the LowDown Brass Band (LDB) and Chicago based producer Nic the Graduate. Released on Chicago reggae/ska label Happy As A Lark Records, “We Just Want to Be”, written by saxophonist Chris Neal, was originally the title track for LDB’s 2009 EP. The ReMix elegantly crafted by Nic the Graduate catapults the track to higher ground. With his irie addition of organs, dub effects, and heavy drum sounds the Graduate’s treatment echoes the classic reggae/dub producers of the past such as Lee Scratch Perry, yet still blazes paths forward to the modern day sounds of hip-hop. The track also features a collaboration with Chicago based hip-hop/reggae MC Illuminati Congo and the LDB’s resident MC and long time collaborator Billa Camp. Both Illuminati Congo and Billa Camp masterfully intertwine the world of hip-hop with the groove of the reggae idiom as they trade verses back and forth creating the perfect poetic canvas for the songs theme of living life without restraint and in tune with one’s true nature. Whether the words of Billa Camp, “Don't you be telling me, What it is I shouldn't do, If the way that I'm living is wrong, Then save it I'm not in the mood…” or Illuminati Congo, “All I desire Is taking it higher, If you deny it We burning the fire!”, We Just Want to be is sure to elevate your current state of being so spark up the chalice and enjoy the ride!

LowDown Brass Band (LDB) deftly synthesizes the gritty sounds of Chicago with the high energy second-line street beat of the Crescent City. LDB brandishes a powerful brass frontline of trumpets, trombones, saxophones, with a funky backline of drums and sousaphone. Combining the poetic ferocity of Billa Camp with stellar vocal harmonies, adventurous improvisation, movement, and grooves, LDB creates an infectious and diverse sound that has something for every listener.

Fresh off their appearance at The 2017 Chicago Jazz Festival, LowDown maintains a constant performing and touring schedule throughout North America. In 2015, LDB released an ambitious project titled “LowDown Sounds” that included a critically acclaimed cameo by Roy Ayers on the track "Everybody Loves The Sunshine." LowDown Brass is now set to begin the next chapter with the release of their 5th self-produced full length studio album "LowDown Breaks." This new offering steps deeper into refining their unique sound, combining the hip hop sound with multiple world music and jazz styles.

Nic The Graduate has taken Jahn’s eclectic background and layered it with equally eclectic beats. As a Multi-instrumentalist, producer and dj for many years in Chicago, he is most attracted to music that elicits an emotional response.

Rather than just being impressed by songs that get the dance floor packed or stay in your head for hours, he is always more interested in music with a meaning- or soul. In producing the Illuminati Congo album, he has made it apparent that hip hop is truly a global style, combining traditionally heavy beats and bass lines with some unexpected twists and turns from other genres. In using a wide variety of live instruments and samplers The Graduate is able create a fusion that activates the soul as well as the dancing spirit.

Jahn The Baptist is unlike any other rapper out there. He is able to utilize his mantra of “as above, so below” to formulate a refreshing unity of the higher self and lower self. His lyrics reflect both his practice of spirituality and his embrace of earthly, human desires.

His words are meant to appeal both to Yogis as well as the inner city Hood- with an authoritative demeanor that lets you know he is equally of both. Having studied and taught Kundalini Yoga and Rebirthing Breathwork as well as being an avid herbalist in the Rastafarian community, Jahns true goal is to heal. Heal the world of its ills through awareness of self and the practice of unconditional love. Hip hop is an art form that has the ability to communicate complex ideas to a potentially large audience, let it not go to waste!

Billa Camp: Passionate & Determined, Billa Camp is a recording artist that fears no boundaries when it comes to musical genres. Born in New York, Billa was naturally influenced by Hip Hop culture and the artistic spirit of Harlem. Relocating to the South Side of Chicago in his early teens proved to be beneficial in the creation of his own style. Mixing his East Coast influences with Chicago’s and the rest of the World’s.

Prior to forming The Dread and collaborating with Lowdown Brass Band, Billa Camp wrote, produced, and toured with his former band, Treologic. Billa’s vocals and production are featured in the video game Watch Dogs and on ABC’s television show Black Box (Episode 2 - Sweet Little Lies). As a solo artist, Billa’s also been featured on Fuse TV, opened for N.E.R.D, Wiz Khalifa, Pac Div, Del the Funky Homosapien and many more.

Billa perceives every opportunity as a chance to truly fulfill his musical journey.
