Album Notes
Reviews of her previous albums described her as "a little bit Annie Lennox, some Ella Fitzgerald, with a hint of Edith Piaf" (Performing Songwriter Magazine), and arriving with "enough multifaceted talent and musical maturity to make Norah Jones blush." (San Francisco Bay Guardian) With her latest release, "Unexpected", Erika (pronounced Eddy-kah) fires all engines and launches a powerhouse album.

This citizen of the world who was born in Mexico, raised in Venezuela and Brazil, and later soaked up European flavor while living in France, uses a global palette to create an album that touches a universal core. Whether singing in English, Spanish, French or Portuguese, her warm and passionate voice elicits the depth of her lyrics; although you may not understand the words, you feel the essence of the song, the pulse of the emotion. Referring to her use of many languages, Erika says, "I think of language as a musical texture - sounds and colors that work with the groove and feel of a song."

A multi-award winning songwriter, guitarist and vocalist who recently was honored as Female Artist of the Year 2004 at the JPF Music Awards (the largest independent music organization in the world,) Erika Luckett reveals the scope and breadth of her musical horizon. Working closely with producer Jeffrey Wood (Penelope Houston, Hank Williams III, Luka Bloom), bass player Paul Olguin (Mazzy Star, Mary Wells) and drummer, Dawn Richardson (4 Non Blondes, Kindness), she crafted a collection of eleven songs that stretch from the driving rumba flamenca, "Si Volverá" and the passionate ballad, "Deepest Deep", to the sexy, pop howl of the title track, "Unexpected."

The album steers across genres, with Erika's voice, guitars and songwriting serving as the steady keel, the connective tissue that ties this adventurous and compelling course together. There are numerous gems that contribute to the sparkle of the production: the presence of a luscious string quartet on "Deepest Deep" and "Une Profonde Douceur" (the French version of the same tune), the electric guitar that lays down the slinky montuno on "Siete Ríos" (a rich melody that sounds like a meeting of Carlos Santana and Bebel Gilberto), the powerful and intuitive rhythm section, and the ever present intimacy of Erika's voice. In "Unexpected" we experience the artist, her music, and a bold step outside the ordinary. Let the joy begin!

She just gets better and better!
I first heard Erika a couple years ago, and loved her then... this CD is a perfect example of all there is to love about her! No matter the language, no matter the tempo, no matter the subject: her voice is fabulous. I am impressed by how much she has grown as a singer in the past couple of years and by the diversity of music on this album. Love to hear her in other languages as much as I love to hear her in English. I have three words for Erika: MORE, MORE MORE!

Take a ride
This album blows me away. First I thought it was her voice. Then I let the songs take me, groove by groove, melody by melody, texture by texture. Lying down with headphones on, eyes closed, I feel like I got a trip across the globe, through the cosmos and into the core of this incredibly talented artist. And what's best, is that when I got to soak in the richness of it, I felt like I had found a new home.

Luckett's lastest showcases her versatility !!
As the title implies Luckett's versatility abounds on this latest recording. This album has it all: Rock, Pop, Latin.
The poetic and lyrical mastery of 'Deepest Deep' in English and French will tug at your heart. Accompanied by the compelling rhythm of Dawn Richardson and Paul Olguin with luscious strings added for the sensual ballads. it's difficult to choose a favorite.

Erika's amazing breakthrough
With this beautiful collection, Erika Luckett brought her evolving musical expression to a startling new height. It is breathtakingly clear from the very beginning of opening song "Were I," that we are going to experience something unheard of. It captures you the moment you "enter" the album with her inspired singing and poetic intensity like a magic carpet ride. Don't leave it there yet. Read her printed lylic, and listen to it again. Absorb all the visual information from photographic images and her mysterious drawings. Then start all over again. So finally, you see what I mean; this is not just another album of a vastly talented musician. This is an album that marks both artistic and personal breakthrough expressed in every elements, as a synthethic whole. Musically ever more diverse (tunes and styles from three continents,) and technically ever more complex (from bold tapping to intricate finger style,) however, this recording imprints her unique perspective and creative imagination not so much with her idiosyncratic versatality itself; this time, she does it so with her singular voice. Yes, it is her new voice that gives such luminous quality that brings this diverse collection of tunes so naturally together. For Celan and Bachmann, as poets, the word "Atem (breath)" has both physical and symbolic meaning as the source of life. Life breaths. For Erika, it is not so much of stretch to say "Life sings." Now, she is full of singing. Whether you are her repeated listner or not, don't miss these songs. They will change the way you listen to all the possible music around you, as well as the very notion of what modern popular music can actually be. And remember, this is, at least for Erika, just a new beginning. Her horizon seems limitless.

This is the first time that I have felt Erika's recorded music elevate to reflect the light that she carries on stage and in person. This album shows not only how she has deepened as an artist, but and as an individual and divine influence in this world of faceless pop culture and music. She has arrived, and this album, in my opinion, is her strongest and most effective work to date.

Beautiful beautiful beautiful. Congratulations Erika.

Shine, shine, shine...a bright spot at the break of winter.
This recording is one of the best I've heard in a while...and it's one of those ones that draws you in the first time through and keeps it right there in your cd player. The lyrics are smart and deep and the musical arrangements are just fab. This cd highlights Erika's prowess as a phenomenal guitarist and arranger as well as poet/songwriter - in several languages! She shines - and her star is definitely on the rise. Well done; brava!
