ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Following a corporate career as a pharmaceutical executive, Lydia Calhoun returned to her true passion as a classically- trained clarinetist. Born in the small Texas town of Cleburne, Lydia knew at the age of seven she had chosen the sound of her soul when she began playing clarinet.
During her tenure as a full-ride scholarship student of Juilliard-educated John C. Fullam, Lydia earned her degree in clarinet performance. Mr. Fullam, principal clarinetist of the Buffalo Philharmonic recently commented: “You didn’t choose music. Music chose you.”
Lydia’s musical talents have taken her from small halls to Carnegie Hall where she has performed on multiple occasions as principal clarinetist under the direction of world-renowned English composer and conductor John Rutter. She has performed at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California; St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City; and in the Sydney Opera House. Lydia has appeared throughout the world touring to England, Scotland, Wales, the Caribbean, New Zealand and Australia.
CAROLS FOR THE KING FROM AROUND THE WORLD™ is Lydia Calhoun’s premier CD recording project. She has commissioned renowned composer/arranger Evelyn Larter to arrange familiar sacred carols from Italy, Germany, Scotland, France, the Caribbean and other countries. Listeners will enjoy the soulful rendition of Silent Night contrasted with the whimsical version of The Zither Carol and the traditional sounds of King Jesus Hath a Garden. Beginning with the strains of a gospel- inspired spiritual and transitioning into a finger-snapping melody, Rise Up Shepherd/Tell it on the Mountain is sure to bring a smile. King of the Universe is an original composition with a lilting ballad-style carol composed by Lydia Calhoun.

FROM THE ARRANGER: This project began because of the challenge Lydia was experiencing in finding interesting music for clarinet. Searching through flute repertoire for something she could adapt for her instrument she came across my volume of ten jazz carols; this began an email correspondence which has culminated in our extensive new collection for the Christmas season. We enjoyed selecting the carols to include - I was particularly pleased to have the lovely Scottish Gaelic carol, Child in the Manger, on the list, having known it all my life, long before its haunting melody was used for the popular song, Morning Has Broken. Of the twenty-one tracks in this double CD, seventeen are newly composed for the project. We hope it gives you pleasure as you listen. ~ Evelyn R. Larter
