Carolina Highway is a project that songs are inspired by so many things and I wanted to share some of them. I think the story behind a song makes it come to life even more for the listener, and I wanted to briefly share that with folks. Carolina Highway was written as I traveled to Charleston and back home in the mountains of North Carolina. A Song From Me To You was written for all the folks that tell me how much one of my songs mean to them, and of course for family and friends. Hey Annie was inspired by my friends, LeAnn and Jeffrey, a sweet and adoring young couple. Little Piggy In The Sunshine is a song I wrote after I saw some pigs laying in the sunshine on a hillside farm near my house. Old Dirt Road reminds me of my childhood riding down the back roads of Western NC. Deep Dark Hole is a song about young love and the first line of each verse just came to me and I built on those lines. Mama’s Lil’ Baby was inspired from a song my Mama taught me when I was barely old enough to walk and it stuck with me, of course, I wrote some lines with my own twist to spice it up a little bit. I thank my sweet Mama for teaching me a whole bunch of old songs that I will always treasure. Two Coats is an old Appalachian folk song that I always love to sing. House Of Gold is an old Hank Williams song that I enjoy singing and putting a little blues mojo feeling on it. Patriotic Medley is a portion of several songs that make me take pause and reflect on our journey as a nation and the pride I feel for our country. Young Hearts, Young Love is a song I wrote about the young ones in my family experiencing love. Bless The Broken Road is one of my favorite love songs. The Wind Blows Through The Holler, a song I wrote about the harsh, cold winters in the mountains. Last and most importantly, is He Was A Soldier which is about my cousin, Cpl. Paul R. Stepp, Jr. He was killed in Vietnam in 1970, while serving in the Army. My last memory of him was at his going away party and seeing him and his fiancée walking away for a last date. When the news came of his death, it devastated all of us especially his immediate family. Since that time I really give thanks to all those who make the sacrifice to serve our country, and their families. I am honored to write this song in memory of my cousin, and to all service members especially those that have made the ultimate sacrifice.
