Album Notes
This album has been called the "WOW" album due to the unusual nature that is has incredible audio with no adjustments to the original recording. It is raw. It is real. And no software has been used to change the music or the vocals. This is the Super Audio Hybrid version of the album and includes a CD layer that plays on most CDs players, including those in cars; it also has 24 tracks of the DSD layer that include 12 from a "needle drop" of the direct to disc vinyl record and also tracks 13-24 include the digitalized version of the tape captured at the same time the direct to disc lacquer was recorded. Tracks 13-24 were engineered by Bernie Grundman Mastering and have a different sound requirement (higher volume) than tracks 1-12, engineered by Gus Skinas of Super Audio Center.

About the album and it's music: Buzz is building about London with a Twist—Live at Bernie’s, the 7th album from jazz chanteuse Lyn Stanley. Internationally renowned for her velvety alto, sophisticated material, and uniquely personal approach to songs, with this new recording Stanley continues her homage to another sultry Southern California singing sensation, vocalist Julie London.
Most of the dozen tunes on London with a Twist—Live at Bernie’s are straight from London’s repertoire. Three are new takes on tunes reprised from Stanley’s acclaimed 2018 release, London Calling—A Toast to Julie London, featuring a new band, The Jazz Mavericks, and new arrangements this time around.
The London with a Twist collection includes several songs London never performed, including Bruce Springsteen’s “Pink Cadillac” and Chuck Berry’s “You Never Can Tell” (which the Boss also has covered). “I always find something of my own,” Lyn notes of these classics. “Julie did pop songs, and if she can segue into pop, why can’t I? I’m not pretending to be Julie, I’m honoring her.”
Perhaps surprisingly, London never recorded “Route 66,” another song included here. It was written by her husband of 40 years, Bobby Troup, and was a big hit for Nat “King” Cole. Stanley speculates that London may not have covered it so the composition would stay firmly associated with her spouse, instead of her.
Highlights from London with a Twist include:
“Body and Soul” The ultimate jazz standard is stamped with the Stanley touch of cool, but there’s also a new vulnerability in her delivery that touches the heart.
“Let There Be Love” An inviting, lively tempo sets this interpretation apart from the familiar ballad versions, communicating optimism and a sense of fun.
“Goody Goody” With her worldly and sophisticated vocal, Stanley owns the moment, giving a nice edge to a kiss-off song.
“Pink Cadillac” Bruce Springsteen’s team heard and approved the finished version. Does anything more need to be said?
Lyn Stanley’s recording career is an artistic and financial success story. She was discovered in 2011 by the iconic pianist Paul Smith, renowned as Ella Fitzgerald’s long-time musical director and frequent collaborator. Stanley has been making musical waves since her debut album, 2013’s Lost in Romance.
From the start, Stanley has made herself a standout in the crowded—and not especially lucrative—field of jazz vocalists by finding a niche she’s passionate about and sticking to it. Building on an early interest in audiophile recording—she could always hear the difference—Stanley has become deeply knowledgeable about the technical end of making an album. “I’d take a great audio system over a fancy car or a big diamond any day,” the vocalist muses. She typically releases her recordings in multiple formats, drawing the attention of the underserved audiophile consumer.
With each of her releases since Lost in Romance, the singer’s attention to detail in the studio has garnered raves, and she makes a practice of working with top-flight musicians and engineers. London with a Twist—Live at Bernie’s is no exception to the rule. Stanley’s vaunted care in production has resulted in sales of more than 40,000 units, grossing more than $500,000 since her 2013 debut, figures practically unheard of in the miniscule independently produced jazz market.
