by Mack Evans

The original music of this Southern blues artist - Delta blues, rockabilly, with a bit of sexy R&B in the mix- is as unusual and ear-catching as his bass voice and Dobro mastery. If you like Tom Waits, Keb'mo, or John Lee Hooker, this one's for you.

Mack Evans' career in music has spanned everything from performing in bar bands to a doctorate in the blues as American literature. His love for Americana and roots music as well as rockabilly and R&B come together in the eclectic debut "Lowdown." On this new album, he joins a talented group of musicians who have backed the likes of Ray Charles, John Lee Hooker, Johnny Winter, and the Allman Brothers on tracks which display his unique bass voice and Dobro expertise.

Deep Authentic
It would be a real mistake to listen to Dr. Mack Evan's music as an unusually intelligent sampler of deep Southeast US musical influences. There's a darker, deeper authenticity here. Like Tom Waits or J.J. Cale, Mack Evans is digging down, culturally, to find stuff to use as an artist. Like Dylan's work from the 90's on, Mack's using a selected voice, like Tex Beneke, Ferlin Husky, Barry White (and maybe David Lynch), etc., to launch a narrative, resembling, more than John Lee Hooker, a Borges short story. With an open-ended finish, like really vital contemporary music offers, from the Arcade Fire to Beck, to even Paul McCartney, these days.

Looking forward to the next one, seriously.

Music Umbrella

Mack is one of those unique artists who comes along every twenty or thirty years with a special way of emoting vocally and combining it with great melodies and succinct lyrics. His bluesy style will have its core audience here in the States but he will likely score bigger success in Europe with his really cool styling. The cd is well produced and arranged by Denny Le Roux, who is also a diamond in the rough talent

Lowdown on Lowdown
The album Lowdown is infused with humor revealing Mack’s intense powers of observation within the human (nightclub/bar/pub) condition. Every song is an authentic treat full of aural stimulation that will tickle anyone’s fancy. The music and words are so well crafted with enough variety of tone and style that listening becomes very interesting. If art is a reflection of the society in which it was created, then Lowdown is a magnificent masterpiece of elegant blues styling.
