Break the Crystal Frame

by Maeve Louise Heaney

Beautifully refreshing…thoughtfully provocative. Music that breaks the crystal frame that dulls our senses, making the Real seem just out of reach. Music that cuts through the daily fog, pronounces your name, and strikes a chord you were born to hear.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
I believe music doesn't lie. I think it cuts through our reasons and expresses "from deep to deep' what we live and why we live it. I think music born of fun can be fun to listen to; music born of pain empathizes with us and helps us heal; and music born of prayer prays for you, in some way.

Music is born of life... and this is mine: I am from Ireland, and belong to a young Catholic missionary community called Verbum Dei (Word of God) and as such my life and faith are rooted in an experience of Christ, but the music is not only about prayer, or even especially liturgical. It aims to 'sing life' coloured by faith, in all its beauty and passion, fun and pain. I sometimes feel I live two worlds that belong together but that sometimes 'fight': that of a deep and profound experience of God as personal and close and loving, and the human world of comings and goings, needs, longings and hopes, in and through which God becomes present if only we have ears to hear.

I have dived into many different countries and cultures: Ireland, Spain, England, Italy, the US, now Australia where I live, compose, teach at ACU, in Brisbane. So I have written music in English, Spanish and Italian, although mostly English, but you will find some Italian songs here. As a musician and composer, I work in the areas of evangelization, education and liturgy. I recently published a book called Music as Theology: What Music Says about the Word, which, among other things, seeks to ground and explain what music means for me.

My songs are born of prayer, and of life. They aim to express honestly, melodically and poetically the faith that sustains y life, and yet to give it a different access point. The worst thing that can happen to us is to 'get used to' the amazing things we have, and life is full of them! I hope this music lets you taste it that way. Because you can 'taste' music :). Or through music, you taste life and God better.

This CD? Break the Crystal Frame: "There is no great distance, no insurmountable wall, between God and us…just a crystal frame that dulls our senses, making the Real seem just out of reach. But our worlds are alive with moving grace; it can be tasted, bittersweet, in every experience we go through. We simply need to break the glass. And music does that well, at times. I hope (and pray) that, through these songs, the Love that sustains all things may cut through your daily fog, pronounce your name, and strike a chord you were born to hear."
