Album Notes
A murder of crows, a crowder of cats, an obstinacy of buffalo, a skulk of foxes, a gang of turkeys, a congress of salamanders, a shrewdness of apes, a band of gorillas, a barrel of monkeys…a tiding of magpies. “Tiding” is defined by Merriam-Webster as a piece of news, usually in plural. Naming a group of magpies a “tiding” may have resulted from the ancient superstitious belief about magpies that their appearance portends the future, brings news or tells a tale. The old rhyme says, “One’s for sorrow, two’s for joy…” and goes on. So we have become a tiding.
When we began work on this recording in 2017, entering into our 45th year that fall, and on into the first half of 2018, we were looking forward to having the CD in hand for the celebratory concert tour we would be performing in the fall of ’18, 45 years after our beginnings in Kent, Ohio in the fall of 1973. We began to line up the various places significant in our career that we would want to visit to observe this anniversary. In a sense, this recording turns out to be a great big celebration of gratitude. We are ever more thankful for all of you who helped to pull us through some very difficult days. You are the ones we sing about in Pete Seeger’s classic song, “Old Devil Time”, heard on this record: “Old devil pain, you often pinned me down. You thought I’d cry and beg you for the end. But at that very time my lovers gathered ‘round and helped me rise to fight you one more time…”
Contained in this rather long compendium of songs (it would have been a 2-LP set if it were vinyl!) you’ll find a typical Magpie eclectic collection, from serious storytelling to a few jokes, swing to folk, originals and covers, with a healthy dose of comment on our world. We hope you enjoy it and find some favorite songs herein.
We dedicate this recording in loving memory of my brother Jeff Artzner, and our dear friends David Prittie and Bill Spence.
