ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Vibist Dave Hagedorn “brings an integrated knowledge of complex harmony and rhythm that never fails to swing or to move anyone with ears” (Don Berryman, Jazz Police). One of the most educated of Twin Cities’ jazz artists, Dave earned degrees from the U of M, New England Conservatory, and a doctorate from the Eastman School of Music. Covering jazz and classical performance, he has recorded with the George Russell Living Time Orchestra and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. In the Twin Cities, Dave maintains his classical chops with guest appearances with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Minnesota Contemporary Ensemble, and Plymouth Music Series. He’s a regular performer with the Phil Hey Quartet and Source Code, as well as with Main Time. In his “day job” at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Dave is “artist in residence” and director of jazz ensembles. He released Solid/Liquid on Artegra in 2003.

Guitarist Chris Olson is also a dedicated jazz educator. Since earning a master’s degree in jazz studies/performance from the University of North Texas, he’s taught guitar, jazz history and improvisation as well as directing jazz ensembles at UW-Stevens Point, Wausau Conservatory of Music, UW-Marathon County, and Inver Hills Community College. Currently on the guitar faculty at McNally/Smith College in St. Paul, he also teaches guitar lessons and jazz combos at the MacPhail Center for Music and summer programs at the Shell Lake (WI) Arts Center. Chris has performed with Bob Mintzer, Louis Bellson, Terry Gibbs, Ira Sullivan, and Bobby Vinton. In addition to Meantime, he is a regular member of the trio Framework, and is a frequent performer at the French Press Jazz Café in St. Paul

Bassist Kevin Clements received a music degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. A member of the Carleton College Adjunct faculty, these days he divides his time between performing, teaching, and flying airplanes. In addition to Maintime, Kevin has recently performed at Rossi’s as a member of the Laura Caviani Trio, and is a first-call musician for many other Twin Cities’ jazz artists.

Of trapset master Jay Epstein, Cadence Magazine’s David Lewis noted that “his dazzling cymbal and snare work extends the lineage of Tony Williams and Jack DeJohnette.” Most any night of the week, you can find Jay on the bandstand with Laura Caviani, Dean Magraw’s Red Planet, Framework, and in Europe with Bill Carrothers. Jay plays percussion along side of drummer Bill Stewart on Carrothers' "Armistice 1918" CD. He released his own acclaimed recording, "Long Ago" (available here: http://www.bridgeboymusic.com/longago/main.htm ),which features Anthony Cox and Bill Carrothers, and appears on each of Gordy Johnson’s Trios, with a list of sideman credits including gigs or recordings with Barney Kessel, Roseanna Vitro, Manfredo Fest, Sheila Jordan, Terry Gibbs, Greg Abate, Claudio Roditi, Gary Foster, Kim Richmond, Vinny Golia, JoAnne Brackeen, Ernie Watts, Wayne Johnson, Karrin Allyson, Kenny Werner, Howard Levy, Toots Thielmans, Avashai Cohen, and Sarah Vaughan.
