ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Another Venus proves to be MLR's best record yet.

With the successful release of outsmarted in 1998, MLR quickly followed up their debut with a CD of world-class proportions.

Excellent songwriting, arrangements and fidelity reminiscent of the Beatles and Nirvana.

One of the most interesting rock albums to come along recently. This is a real band, no samples, no loops, no tricks, just good tunes.

Just A Fan...

Bubblegum just got a little sweeter...
I actually picked up a copy of this at a used store in Boston, not knowing too much about the band, except that they had a catchy-fun-pop sound. This CD starts off with a whallop and takes you through a tour of fine pop gems. It is hard to believe that a 3 piece band can make this much good music!!!

Dynamic and Resourceful
The sophomore release from Make Lisa Rich is rife with glam and new wave styled riffs. The three-piece certainly put a new spin on things. The bass parts were particularly interesting because the lead singer, Bo, often played the bass like a second guitar lending a nice full power chord resonance to the bold hooks. It almost sounded like a piano. At times the bass really carried the melody too and the guitar added the rhythm fill which gives the group thick heavy sounds on tracks like 'Status Symbol.' The group makes their music dynamic by adding lots of tight stops, starts, and pauses. This technique really showcases the vocals and keeps the listener interested. It's amazing how full the music sounds. They really utilize every available resource by putting a mike in front of everyone. So, there's a big sound on the choruses that are sung in unison, and some interesting call and response patterns. 'Airport Rigor Mortis' definitely had the biggest build vocally and musically. It contained lots of peaks and valleys. The subject matter of the songs pertains mostly to girls and, well, more girls. There's 'Cinnamon Anderson,' the Spanish girl, the Corn-fed American girl, girls in summer dresses, the princess, the magazine idol/angel/devil and various other she's and hers. The CD begins with lots of fuzzy guitar feedback, but it's not long before Bo belts out pretentious sneers over dirty drum fills. If that doesn't get you tapping your toe, maybe the tambourine and hand claps will. Trying to figure out who Lisa is will require more effort. -Joanie Pfister
