Jane Maluka’s Album” Journey of DisCovery” has been one of my favorites as a radio DJ on All India RADIO FM Rainbow because its music seems to be as old as the hills and yet so very relevant to the present moment. It forms a part of almost any show I do on radio: retro, pop, world music or jazz and of course personally it is something that always fills me with a warm feeling full of hope.

The market is full of artistes venting their angst (very often fake) against society, family and the world. It has become fashionable to appear dark, angry and depressed. Journey of DisCovery on the other hand is refreshing and speaks of hope, peace and love as answers to any personal despair and trauma, so much of which singer songwriter Jane Maluka experienced in her own turbulent life.

It has a feminist soul with a universal appeal. Unlike most female mainstream artistes, Jane and her music come across as something very real with a subtle message of "To Thine own self be true'.

As a songwriter she has the rare combination of simplicity and depth. A unique edgy voice that is easily identifiable and easy to identify with.

Journey of DisCovery is an album that will never go out of style. Its something you can listen to in your car driving to work or after a hard day and you need to step back and check your bearings or simply if you want to Celebrate life!

There are voices catching your attention
There are voices catching your attention, even though as I, usually underway in utterly different musical universes. Jane Maluka’s voice is one of those.
Her album „Journey of DisCovery“ is in singer-songwriter tradition, dedicated to themes like Peace, Spiritual Healing, and Personal Authenticiy. The songwriting is all the way through good to very good quality. The songs „I SEE YOU, I HEAR YOU“ and „WHERE YOU TURN TO“ in my opinion, qualify World Class Level and should awaken any relevant record label managers’ to be all ears.
AS A SINGER Jane Maluka occasionally reminds of Tracy Chapman – in the positive sense - although her style of singing is utterly unique, and appears to copy nobody.
Moreover, I count Jane Maluka to the rare female singers, whose voice is capable of radiating soothing and healing effects. As for me, this aligns her with stylish totally different artistes like Tarja Turunen (Ex-Nightwish) and Dido.
MUSICALLY impressive are the often minimalistic, basically very laid back and focused instrumentation of the songs, beyond all the effects ‚doping’ and overproductions, prevalent in music business nowadays.
THE TRACKS on the album altogether mould a musical unity; Jane Maluka’s distinct personal signature remains identifiable all the way through. None of the songs lack quality, really. Personal preferences and temper are more down to the point of what one prefers listening to. Personally, the two tracks mentioned above are my favorites - „SUN DANCE“ is too smooth too ‚lounge’ to my taste - VENUS & FRIENDS’ a bit too minimalistic - „COME MY WAY“ has me convinced for the distinct rhythmic elements and the excellent songwriting - „PEACE THE WORLD“ finally, has a touch of the afroamerican spirituals/gospel tradition, thereby expanding the stylistic frame of the album.
ON A CRITICAL note remains to mention that Jane Maluka, by far, is not utilizing her vocal capabilities to the fullest on this album – for this, the songs are kept too laid back all the way through.
„I SEE YOU I HEAR YOU“ stands out partly because Jane Maluka appears to come more forward vocally here, and the capabilities of her unquestioned powerful voice – not at all only gentle temper – shine through. Although the atmospheric harmonious Unity of this album is convincing beyond doubts, I personally would wish to hear songs and vocal interpretations with more fire from Jane Maluka in future. Maybe also with distinct rock/pop instrumentations. No doubt she’s got what it takes. Though, these lines are written by a heavy-metal fan (smile).
Conclusive remains to cement that Jane Maluka’s „Journey of DisCovery“ album is an absolute ‚must-buy’ recommendation – also for persons like me, only occasionally calling for more quiet sounds. To fans of the singer/songwriter tradition this album is a absolute MUST HAVE!
In all Musical honoring, THE MESSAGE conveyed in Jane Maluka’s songs and lyrics should be kept in mind and not go unnoticed. In this respect Jane Maluka is an artist representative taking a strong non-compromising spiritual stand, and simultaneously against any kind of societal or inter-relationship acts of power-abuse, power-abusive governing or violence; so be it inner peace, social justice and maintenance of natural life foundations are inseparably linked.
With a political mesage like this, one is unlikely to make real friends, neither in the esoteric scene nor in social-critical leftwing movements. Consequently, Jane Maluka offers inspiration, food for thought and contemplation, maybe also to confront, and is please-talking nobody.
Exactly this is the reason why her album „Journey of DisCovery“ should find and deserves world wide recognition.
