Album Notes
Informed by a diverse musical background, vibrant Los Angeles vocalist Mandy Kemp bring sass, soul, and sultry sophistication to the music she performs - whether it's Great American Songbook material, contemporary vocal jazz, or crossover Pop. Mandy's vibrant, dynamic style of vocal jazz is best defined in her signature show, "Firecracker Jazz", which she debuted at L.A.'s Upstairs at Vitello’s in October 2017.

Until 2015, music was the path-not-taken for Kemp. She spent her formative years deeply involved in the pursuit of her musical passions, delving into a variety of genres and gaining recognition for her talent along the way. At 18, however, she detoured from her artistic path, forgoing scholarships to some of the U.S.’s top college-conservatory music and theatre programs to instead pursue a career path that, she explains, “felt more practical… and safer.” Over the next decade and a half, Kemp followed a corporate path, obtaining her MBA and working in various Marketing roles in the Silicon Valley business world. “I was being slowly suffocated by an office-building life that didn’t suit me at all,” she says. “I knew I would never feel fully satisfied unless I revisited that path-not-taken. I wasn’t willing to spend the rest of my life wondering ‘what if I’d just gone for it?’” Honoring that passion, Kemp dove back into musical pursuits, moved to Los Angeles in 2016, began building a second career from her first love.

As she began to forge her new career in the Los Angeles music scene, Kemp discovered a passion for one of the few genres she had not yet explored: Jazz. She began intensely studying the nuanced, listening to the greats and studying with some of the artists she most admired, including Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Jane Monheit. With the help of Monheit and some of the incredible L.A. musicians with whom Kemp had connected, the new artist began planning her recording debut. Her first EP, “Firecracker”, establishes her presence in the jazz world as a versatile vocalist whose sparkle and soul brings a unique style to standards and contemporary jazz tunes that is equally refined and energetic.

While she hopes her music will evoke the excitement among audiences that she feels in performing it, she also hopes her story will inspire others to follow their passions and create careers that honor their talents and true selves. Her message to fans: "honor your gifts. And, as the saying goes, 'it's never too late to be what you might have been'."
