Album Notes
The traditional jazz trio format—piano, bass, and drums—is unique in the musical universe. In the sparseness of this context, each instrument has the room to breathe and express, a stark nakedness which contrasts today’s typically over-produced music. At the same time, it is vitally important to be intuitively interconnected, to fly in formation, to ebb and flow together, and demonstrate mutuality and musical encouragement—for all three pieces must still express the same improvised thought.

Playing in a trio is like dancing on a tightrope. You can fall off at any time, but there is an exhilaration walking so high from the ground.

ML3 is a working experiment of sorts—to take the jazz trio format and interpret original lyrically-based music with it. This music can be characterized as “jazz-tinged, piano-driven rock.” ML3 features Matt Sawhill (basses), Chad Jackson (drums), and Manuel Luz (piano/keyboards/vocals).

"Unraveled" is Manuel's fourth solo album, and he brings the Trio to the forefront on this one. From the pop-driven "Make Up Your Mind" to the John Mayer-esque "Unraveled" to their moody jazz version of "Roxanne," be prepared for an album full of eclectic diversions.
