Album Notes
This CD came about a whole lot sooner than expected. Ever since I started Producing Spoken Word CDs, I fell in love with the process of making the music to lay behind the poems, but always placing a few Live Recordings, as performed in a Poetry venue, without music or beats, just the natural harmony from the audience and the roar and applause from the crowd entangled into the poem. At its purest…Spoken Word. But even though the music development has played a big part into my production, I knew I wanted to go back to ground roots, and eventually put out an all Live Album, focusing in on the artform at its rawest form. But even though I had planned for this type of album to be released years from now, sometimes you approach a road a whole lot sooner than expected. The venues have truly molded me into the person that I continue to grow into today. Through the years, people have asked me for pointers and tips on their stage presence, and simply I tell them the most important thing is to be comfortable in front of a mike, because your audience can smell fear, they can smell discomfort, and if you’re not composed, than that’s what they will be focusing on, and not the words from your poem. Oddly, I use to get a nervous feeling before I would perform, only for it to eventually grow into anxiousness, but now, I have been overcome with such a relaxed feeling, that its as if I invited the audience into my own living room, and I were hosting my own party. The poems were written over a course of a couple months, in the process, I was merely just writing, but as I looked at the folder of all the new poems I had written, I noticed myself doing something that I haven’t done in years, performing poems that weren’t on a CD of mine to sell. And while I had already been in the works for a different CD, I wanted to bring justice to my new work immediately, and make it available to my fans to own and take home. Truly, production wise, this could seem like a complete opposite from what I normally release, I placed a few tracks with musical backgrounds, but the focus is truly on the Live setting. It’s always a surprise to see what the audience reacts to, some respond to phrases, words and verses in totally different ways, sometimes their reaction can cause for someone else to get a clearer image of the metaphor that the performer has just given, and sometimes just the mere silence in the room while a Spoken Word Artist is performing, makes just as big an impact as a loud reaction. Unlike the recording both, this is art at it’s purest, meaning, there are no second takes, you can’t cut in if you have any slip ups like you can at the studio, you only have one shot to do it right. And as with all my other CDs, the process was fun, I slaved over the poems, making sure that it would be not only be a perfect fit, but hoping that it could keep one’s attention without the music. It’s always a pleasure to present my new work, and always, much thanks and appreciation to anyone who has supported this project. Finally, I give you, my Live Album…
