ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Greetings, and thanks for stopping by!

I have a new release coming soon, it's been a long time coming since my musical focus has been on my duo, String Fever as of late. But, I'm buckling down to get this new one finished as well as String Fever's second release (which will also be here on cdbaby). Check us out at www.stringfeveronline.com

I've expanded my repertoire in leaps and bounds these past few months: adapting some of my favourite 80's hits, recent hits some and lesser-known tunes into some interesting fingerstyle/vocal arrangements. It's been nice to bust out some of these very unexpected tunes at my solo gigs! I've been taking 'requests' via Facebook and Twitter in the weeks leading up to these gigs and have been able to keep up with most requests within reason! So, if you're going to be in Ontario and wanna check out what I do in a live context, look me up on the Facebook machine for up to date gig announcements as well as some fun discourse on music, food and all kinds o' fun stuff.

I'm also seeking venues in Western Canada and throughout the U.S., so if you're in any of those locations and know of some funky acoustic venues that I should look into, drop me a line and I will do my best to hook up with your contacts for some gigs in your area. FYI, house parties are some of my most favourite things in the world to play at!!
In this super-connected information age, us indie musicians not only love interaction with our fanbase, but also rely on it for feedback and for making connections and contacts in places we haven't heard of, so don't hold back if you have something on your mind you want to discuss, ask or let us know about!

About this album, "Night Vision"....

Firstly, it does not include a manual on how to see in the dark or build your own night vision goggles...
"Night Vision" is about the special dynamic that exists between mind and music, for the composer, the performer and the audience. All good art has an elemental magic that expresses the spectrum of human emotion and makes it a vehicle for sharing our personal views on the experience of life itself. The painter uses brush strokes, the sculptor chooses clay and stone, the musician plays with sound. Music can speak so much louder than words."

-The process and thoughts behind 'Night Vision'...

It's more than chords and words to me. Most of my music is instrumental, which is something that really intrigued me about some jazz and classical music as a young musician; no words, but the song still works. It's about the melody, the chords, the obvious and the implied movements, '...the artful arrangement of sounds over time...'

Writing instrumental music starts as a meditation. Allowing ideas to ebb and flow; variations, alterations and improvisation is all key to me in the writing process.
On Night Vision there are a number of improvised pieces of varying degrees; Awake and Dreaming was a completely improvised piece, taking place at about 3:00AM one winter's night. I kept waking up with the first four bars or so running through my head for at least a week, one night I decided I should just get it out of my head! What you hear is the first run through, then a complimentary nylon string guitar solo, both done in one take. The steel string guitar is tuned CGDGCD in case you wanna give it a try!

Musicians bridge the gap between the seen and the unseen, the heard and the otherwise silent, the light and the dark. The music makes a connection to the listener with sound; that sound can mean many different things to many different people but the intent of the musician and the message of the song, even if it doesn't have words, is still there on a very subtle but very certain level; the musician is the vehicle through which that message is offered.
The greatest satisfaction I receive, is in hearing from listeners that they have been touched by this music I have offered. Not everybody 'listens' with all their senses and that is only to be expected, but the potential for subtle yet profound communication on the vibrational level is where all of us, I believe, know that the most meaningful experiences occur. It's not a secret only known by a select few, or a level of attainment gleaned from hermetic isolation; its communication from mind to mind, heart to heart, soul to soul.

Thanks for reading, thanks for listening!

Very organic, very deep in your chords and melodies. I kept listening to the samples over and over, especially Night Vision, I was enchanted, it pulled me in! I've added it to my wish list for my wife to buy for me!.
